Catalans sign former Eels star Edwards

Catalans Dragons have signed former Parramatta backrower Kenny Edwards with immediate effect.

Edwards, 28, has signed a one-and-a-half year deal that will keep him at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium until the end of 2019.

“Me and my family are really excited and looking forward to this new challenge in the South of France,” said Edwards.

“I want to come out there and be the best I can be every day and help the team to win the club’s first trophy.”

A former Junior Kiwi, Edwards played for Manly and St George Illawarra in the NRC Competition before joining Parramatta in 2013. Named at second-row in the 2013 New South Wales Cup team of the year, he made his NRL debut on the same year.

He has since played 70 matches for the Eels and scored six tries.

He will arrive at Perpignan tonight (Friday) and will be introduced to the fans tomorrow at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium prior to the Dragons’ game against Leeds Rhinos.

Dragons headcoach Steve McNamara said: “Signing a player of Kenny’s ability at this stage of the season is a big boost to our current squad. He is the type of player that will add something different from an attacking perspective and a player who plays with huge enthusiasm and energy. We look forward to welcoming him and his family to the Dragons.”

Club CEO Christophe Jouffret said : “We are delighted to have found an agreement with Kenny and his agent Chris Orr, with three other clubs in the race at the Magic Weekend to sign these explosive player. He will add quality to our pack while were are aiming a Top 8 spot.”
