I put an extra feeder out last week and used sunflower hearts for the first time - the result being that the whole garden has exploded into life.

There are dozens of siskins and goldfinches flocking to the new feeder, while a number of previous visitors appear to have rediscovered our garden. I've had bullfinch, great ######, long tailed ######, greenfinch, nuthatch and wren in addition to the usual daily visitors.

Sunflower hearts go down well.

A feature of this winter, with the long periods of relatively warm weather, has been a marked variability in the numbers of birds feeding in gardens, presumably because food stocks elsewhere have been good. Always good to get nuthatch and siskin, both handsome birds.

The robin is the belligerent little scrum half of the avian world.

Yup. They are very territorial and pretty aggressive to other robins.
