Tonight I will be drinking a couple of bottles of Erdinger Dunkel to make up for the fact I cannot make it to Salford.
(see below)

After regular ferry trips to Belgium I now have a taste for the beers of Europe especially some of the fantastic Trappist ones. My list of favourites include Judas, Chimey, Westmalle, Duval, Timmermans etc
Most supermarkets now stock a small selection but I have just found a great little shop in York just off the shambles that has a good selection. I intend as a purely scientific and research purpose to try them all.
Has anyone any recommendations of beers I should try next.

Not many fancy beers available here. I usually drink wine now blush.gif , but if I do have a beer, it's Amstel. Bog standard, fairly tasteless, cold and wet, lager. I did use to like their dark version - Bock - but the headaches the following morning put paid to that. Not hangovers, just headaches. Weird. blink.gif

As for the fancy beers, they are quite interesting and some make for a good drink, but they wouldn't be my choice for a session.

Well I like English traditional ales. But when I do drink continental. If it's lager I like Budweiser Budvar or Pilnser Urquell.
But Belgian ales are superb.

Augustijn is one of my favourites. They are strong, but very tasty. Most are supposed to be drunk from a special glass for that particular beer, but it's not essential.
Helen likes Belle Vue Kriek.

Once had a shocking night in Caen on Leffe, never been able to touch it since.

The nicest beer I had in Belgium was an absolutely bog standard, totally non-trappist lager, I think it is called Jupiler, very refreshing.

I've tried German beers in germany which were fine enough but I'd say the 2 that stand out for me are Tiger beer that I had in the Maldives

and Red Stripe when I was in the Dominican Republic*

don't know if it was due to where it was brewed as opposed to being brewed under licence over here

We have Jupiler in the village Pool Center and Heineken in the cafe bar across the road.....ok on their own (Jupiler is the better of the two) but never mix them ....mother of all headaches.
Domelsch is a good Dutch beer from a small brewery near Eindhoven.
Hertog Jan is another but is now owned by AB InBev as is Hoegaarden, a wheat beer that is white and cloudy to look at, giving the first timer the impression its a bad beer.

Veltins; a German beer which is massively difficult to get over here.

Peroni Gran Reserva; relatively easy to get, available from most Tescos, but not cheap at £1.90 for a 300ml bottle.

Not just the first timer, yanto. I simply can't drink a cloudy beer.

My favourite beer isn't brewed anymore. sad.gif Forty years ago, Boddingtons Bitter was the nonpareil. Nothing since has got anywhere near and Boddy's itself is now ######!

Memo to self. Robinson's was pretty bloody good, too as I recall. Must seek it out next week.

I like a Duval. Partial to most Belgian beers, but to be honest I prefer a hoppy real ale. Going on an invite only brewery tour organised by my local's landlord in a couple of weeks. That may be messy.

Excellent. I love the Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel. The Kellerbiers are very good too, much better than plain old Helles.

I've just spent a couple of days in Germany this week and spent both nights drinking the blonde Erdinger stuff. I forget it's name, but it was very nice.

Until now I hadn't known that Erdinger Dunkel exists. I will now track it down.

Off to watch RC The Bassets v Utrecht RC in Sassenheim this afternoon in a championship (union) decider.
I used to coach The Bassets and if the results go their way they become champions and I can feel a party coming on.
The club used to stock Grolsch which is another ###### beer but changed to Heineken a few years ago.
Maybe its just me but Heineken and Grolsch (include Amstel in that as well) are just chemicals in a glass.
Then its back to the village for some Jupiler.....glad I am free in the morning because I can feel a thumper coming on huh.gif

I didn't either I found it in my local Morrisons. Very nice it is to. My local Aldi also has a good selection of German wheat beers.

Don't know about 40 years ago but I can remember 30 years ago and Boddies bitter was by far and away the best tipple to be had.

Like a lot of things these days - just not the same.

I remember first tasting Boddingtons at a Beer Festival at Batley Town Hall in 1976. It was brilliant. The only place you could obtain it in Yorkshire at the time was at the Kinsley Hotel between Pontefract and Barnsley, TBH a bit of a dump, but I used to visit regularly just for the beer. (one pint only) Later Boddies expanded further into Yorkshire and they had tied houses at the Golden Lion in Beeston and The Painters Arms in Drigh. But then they sold out to Whitbread and became a national brand and the unique taste of Boddies seemed to disappear. Shame really. Tetleys doesn't taste anything like as good as it did thirty years ago and I expect that once it's no longer brewed in Leeds it'll taste just like all the other national brands - sad.

Oettingwer. Was in aldi for £4.20ish for 6 500ml cans. have not seen it recently

Also a poor mans Sol (cannot remeber name) was in aldi which was not bad from one of the South Americvan countries with the worlds best health warning. It went something like "according to the Surgeon General drinking can effect driving and opperating of machinery" not exact but its put in was way that says 'but what does he know?'. Not seen that for a while in aldi either.

Basically try aldi for some good stuff.
