Bulletproof
What part of Furness is h from exactly Good video, thanks. He is from Widnes, played for the Widnes St Maries amateur team. Seems to be a lot of the old green eyed monster going around about our youth team. Leigh bemoaning the fact that unconnected amateur sides in the region don't count (even though we have plenty of those) and Barrow actually setting one up this year to follow in our footsteps. Hope you wont simply be poaching the hell out of workington, that would be low.
bowes
There's very few players from Workington to poach, Maryport's the real hotbed in their area

Viking Warrior
why has this thread degenerated into a slanging match? surely the prowess of the widnes kids is something we can all be proud of, it just shows that youth development is the way forward for ALL clubs not just the top flight. "Why is Napoleon crying ?" said one sailor to the other, "poor ###### thinks he's being exiled to st helens" came the reply. https://scontent-a-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1455957_262746450543197_276002364_n.jpg

Because the likes of Bulletproof and you (having a go at Bradford's academy set up) are crowing away because the Widnes academy is doing well. Academies are full of players that don't make it and only the odd player each season feeds into the SL squads. The standard academy is played at is quite low according to a number of professional coaches, so Widnes doing well in the academy won't neccessarily translate to them doing well in SL. You two eh? The Parksider
all widnes fans have been proud of our academy for years now. As everyone on this forum probably is. I still like to make a list of the Widnes local products 1970-1990. You can get a whole great britain team out of that. Hope it goes back to that level VW..... Bomb Jack
The 18's have just completed the double over Leeds, beating them 32-20. They also beat Saints last week. I think that's about 7 wins on the bounce for them. Things are looking good. It's a pity the First Team arn't doing as well ( although we have put our money into the Junior Structures rather than the First Team ) Widnes - Cheshire's Original Glamour Club. What more do you want???? The investment in the younger players is great and long may in continue, lets hope you get SL status or having these kids will mean you lose them if your a championship side

BroncoFan
I hope they get a couple of players in the England Academy side, imo Alex Gerrard and Tom Kelly must be a chance of making the squad. Adam Lawton is a year younger so he might get his chance next season. Red Willow
I don't understand the bitterness that these threads decend into. Widnes are a hotbed of RL and are doing great work in maintaining this and therefore should be commended. Fans posting that this should mean a licence is as daft a lobby suggesting Leigh get one for the shape of the stadium. Widnes are building and have some great points towards a bid, the on field performance this season isn't what they would want but then others have weaknesses as well. Why can't we just celebrate and leae it at that. We are too quick to run our sport down.

Great if you have a millionaire Chairman who is willing to cover costs and can fend off SL clubs sniffing local youth in the area. Sadly the likes of Halifax, Leigh, Batley, Dewsbury, Featherstone etc do not have that option and do not have the power to sign the areas best youngsters when Bradford, Huddersfield, Salford etc can offer way more money than these club have. The same applies to all teams, Salford can't offer what Wigan, Warrington can but such is life, just because someone might offer more doesn't mean you shouldn't try. You wouldn't have that attitude to life. It might be annoying but the likes of rich SL clubs won't take all.

If you do not have the cash to run properly an academy for me there its not worth wasting that money. I would think that would cover most Championship teams. For example Barrow are forfeiting games with one of their Youth set ups. What good is that? Other Championship teams have been in a similar situation in the past couple of years. Whats the point in wasting time, money on things that simply are not helping the club? Barrow have more money than probably all other Championship clubs bar Widnes! And do you run an academy with players who are very unlikely to make it? For example Halifax had an Academy that got to 3 Grand Finals in a row a couple of years ago. How many from that era went Pro with Fax? 1! James Haley. The rest are at Siddal, Keighley or teams lower than Fax. Is it worth a cash strapped championship club like Halifax, Batley, Whitehaven, Keighley etc spending money they do not have on players who are unlikely going to make it and on a team that plays in a League where other teams are forfeiting games? Its things like this that the RFL need to sort out below SL level.

The Parksider
In addition to Youth Development Widnes also meet other Super League licence criteria eg stadium, attendances, as well as the on field criterion for Championship clubs. The fact that Widnes have put a lot of effort into the academy is to be congratulated. The fact the academy are doing well is great, but it doesn't prove that Widnes should therefore get an SL licence. It may be Wakefield won't get an SL licence, yet their academy has done great too. The license system rightly requires that all SL clubs work hard to ensure that junior RL is promoted in their areas - along with RFL development officers, and that they take the best and develop them into professionals. So Widnes are simply ticking that box. Bomb Jack is crowing about the results because he's worried Widnes may not get a licence. Jack - top or bottom of the academy the box is ticked mate...... You have the ground and finances to see a full salary cap, rest easy....... The SL licence is not dependant on your academy sweeping all before them! All the Boxes that could feesibly be ticked by a Club in our League are, but that doesn't stop me being nervous. I know we have the " Performance " box ticked from last Season, but if we don't make the 6 this year i feel they could use it against us. Good old RFL................ Segovia Carpet
the production line is up and running, what better way to spend money than in youth development, as opposed to the quick fix of artificial glory. Hate to admit for once I agree with you VW.

Maybe once we have a unified structure it would be better having a setup where clubs can link in with local amateur clubs as already happens with the National Youth League? In the same way it's planned with Super League clubs linking in with Championship clubs? This would strengthen the amateur game rather than Championship clubs trying and often struggling to run reserve sides.
