Pie's v's Skints, by far the biggest and best.

Based on what criteria? The KC regularly hosts derbies with 20,000+ there and the East Hull version is played in a smaller stadium that is not Hull fan friendly. As I said earlier the DWS only had just over 20,000 for a near top of the table clash. If Hull and Rovers were both top four (with one of them at the top) then you'd see which is the biggest derby.

hunslet -leeds in the 50s they used to get 20k for the pre season lazenby cup match.

In 1938 they attracted a then record crowd of 54k for a RL Championship Final to Elland Road. The game was moved there from Wakey and they used the Parkside posts. Must count as the biggest derby game ever.

I used to really look forward to the Bradford - Halifax match. A much better derby than Bradford - that team to the east.

I used to know a 'Fax fan quite well, (this is in the eighties) and he regarded the Bradford game as the most important of their season.

I suppose 'Fax have more derby possibilities than most given the proximity of Bradford, Rochdale, Oldham, Huddersfield and Keighley.

Presumably in the old days when 'Fax and Fartown took it in turns to play in the Lancashire League, the Oldham and Rochdale fixtures were their derbies.

I think we are going to have to agree to disagree. To everybody in Hull the Fc v Kr match is the biggest and nothing will ever change that.

We hate each other, cannot abide anything that Rovers stand for and represent. I will admit not being able to enjoy the Derbies as they just mean to much, your whole life gets affected by the result, and before people say hate is a bad word to use, some of my best mates are KR fans.

I think you'll find the Challenge Cup Final - Hull v Hull KR was the biggest derby crowd!

But its not a Derby ;)

Wrong as already explained.

I think it was the Guardian that listed Wigan v Saints in its top ten list of British sporting contests that were a must see.

Wigan v Saints holds the record for the bigggest league competition gate at 47,747, the biggest CC Final at Wembley gate 98,536.*

I don't see how hatred makes a game a big derby, that is so soccer and oh so pathetic.

*For a Derby.

The difference being of course that the Leeds - Hunslet Championship final actually took place within the city of Leeds - which for me defines a real derby.

But your definition is wrong.

What does constitute a derby in sport? Hull v Hull KR is certainly a derby. As is Leeds v Hunslet. But does Saints/Wigan really count as a derby? Or Leeds/Bradford for that matter?

What about Bradford/Keighley?

I've cited Cas/Fev. The grounds are probably only 3 miles apart and they are both in Wakefield met - but Cas is a town and so is Fev. And what about Wakey? What about Batley, Dewsbury and Huddersfield - all in Kirklees MDC? Swinton and Salford would surely count wouldn't they?

Obviously in soccer Wednesday/United is a derby. Presumably Villa v City, but what about West Brom? Arsenal/Spurs? what about the other London sides? And Man City and Man U are actually in different towns, although they're both called Manchester. Liverpool/Everton is certainly a derby - you can see one ground from the other. So what do we in RL call a derby? And has there ever been a definitive definition of one?

Oh FFS how many times do people have to post the dictionary definition.

"local derby a sporting event between teams from the same area"

Note the word area, not city, not town, not village, not country, not continent, not planet but area.

How big's "an area"? Any distance covers "an area". I want more specifics than "an area".

I think it's touching boundaries, or only divided by water ie you can have countries that have derby games
