It'd be nice if we could have a happy medium. I get grumbled at for letting things go too far, I get grumbled at for stopping abuse. For example, I got whined at last night for deleting a thread that was solely created to bitch, moan and whine that the forum is full of Wigan-supporting losers*, apparently deleting this was "censorship" and restricting the poster's rights to free speech.
Where we draw the line is when people lose all semblance of posting rationally and jump in with both feet on the side of abuse. It's a damnably rare thread that we lock that isn't way beyond the scope of acceptability. What you may not see on locked threads is the number of deleted posts and things that are hidden away.
* Admittedly they are a bit annoying and do snaffle all the pies before anyone else even gets a look in.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't I'm afraid. Its a hard job and that's why I'd never do it. Eating pies obviously breeds better sense.
Personal preference I suppose and wasn't meant to be criticism of you personally - I've only made one semi-serious objection to a thread locking and that was on the grounds of consistency (I'm a stickler for that).
I can't however deny that sometimes it is fun to see the nutters making a fool of themselves - I can make a reasonable guess at who started the above thread you refer to and to be honest if I'm right his card was marked as a complete buffoon within one post.
