Fantastic News that shows how important the Challenge Cup is

SL v NRL is a, quite frankly, stupid comparison on attenances and profit.. the sports are living in totally different circumstances..

the point is that warrington are building well and in an upward trend.. this is a good thing.

Ok lets compare wires crowds to hull kr

kr share the city of hull, play in an older ground and have a strong local soccer side and only average 2000 or so less than warrington

warrington just arent a big club

this recent run of success is due to a sugar daddy and isnt sustainable

you cant build a strong SL side on crowds of just over 10,000

wires crowds were just as high a few seasons back. the CC hasnt done much.

it should be sold out each week

Walt.. with the premiership the team you support now adays very rarely equates to the area you live.. as such any of the north western teams could be pulling their support from warrington and people going to watch there.

lets get it right.. thi is a great news story and their averages are fantastic compared to other teams and to what they used to have.. their aim should be to sell out the ground of course it should as should everyone elses but that doesnt mean anything else is a failure.

yeah so if the latics got relegated, there wouldnt be a massive rise in the warriors gates?

course there would

some clubs are stronger than others

warrington strike me as a lazy club

When comparing Warrington with Hull, you need to keep some figures in mind:

Warrington town pop approx 90,000

Hull city pop approx 260,000

Warrington is pretty much equidistant between Liverpool and Manchester (18 and 20 miles respectively) and the obvious attractions of Premier League soccer. For those lost souls who want it, top flight rugby union at Sale is 20 miles away.

Hull is 60 miles from Leeds and almost 100 miles from the nearest Premier soccer city, Manchester. There is no top flight RU within 60 miles and I would question the statement that Hull City is a strong team.

With regards to sugar daddies, of course we'd like all clubs everywhere to be self sufficient. However that is just not going to happen; I'd be interested to know what would happen to South Sydney if Russell Crowe were to walk away from it all.

Not really. Look at Wigan rugby's crowds when Latics were a nomark 2nd division team, both clubs have totally different fanbases to a large extent. Most Latics fans would or never have any interest in RL.

Warrington aren't lazy they are quite proactive in the community. Theres a lot more to the club besides RL http://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/8...lps_with_money/

Souths would survive but would not be as bigger club without a celebrity owner and worldwide icon.

Wendell you are right in what you say, rugby league clubs are not run to make massive profits, you would be lucky to run even in most cases, its great to see the other Cheshire side have a little bit of fame for a while, whilst Widnes take a rest .but seriously well done wire you deserve you big club status. Ok, lets look at wigans crowds :

1. wigan 15,793

2. warrington 10,500 approx.

<snigger>

so much for winning the CC final being a big boost.

Wigan is more populated than Warrington, it is in Greater Manchester - a conurbation of millions of people, Wigan's stadium is much bigger than Warrington's, oh and not forgetting the Warriors are the most successful rugby club in the world. Both clubs are doing fine.

So please do yourself a favour and shut the ###### up.

The population of the town of Wigan is only 542 more than the town of Warrington. Towns that is, not boroughs. Wigan may be in what was Greater Manchester but Warrington is slap bang between Manchester and Liverpool - a fair population base to target. Not forgetting the whole of Cheshire as well.

While I fully understand the reasons why it happened, it might not have been the best idea for Warrington to build a new ground that only holds 13,000 with little room for expansion. Unless you count filling the corners in to accommodate at extra 500 or so as expansion. Oh, and a ground with its own car park would've been nice as well. Speculate to accumulate is the expression I believe.

When the ground was originally built, it was designed to hold 14,500 not 13,000 people. But as the opening night (which I was at) proved, that would've been 14,500 anorexic dwarfs. I've seen a few round town, but not that many.

When you are not picking up the tab, nor contributing any financial input whatsoever, be it land or build costs, it is difficult/impossible to call the shots.

How can a positive be turned into a negative.

This is a big problem with the RLFF. We spend too much time trying to find the negatives even when, as in this case, something positive has happened. It doesn't matter whether Warrington has a population of 90k or 9 million, an increase in support (and a profit) is welcome just as is Warrington's upward surge in form over the last two seasons.

First point, spot on.

Increase & a profit, second in the league, still in the cup.

How many of the other 13 SL teams would be happy with that???

I guess all of them

I also think the comments on here really do prove RL will never ever be a big sport.

some on here are just like the newspapers, negative, negative and love the BAD things in OUR beloved Sport giving them a chance to gloat.

I have interests in other sports, BUT my love is RL and we need to embrace as one.

RL needs to be gung ho

Spirit of the Squirrel

The Way of the Beaver

The Gift of the Goose

The first secret, the Spirit of the Squirrel, emphasizes the need for people to perform worthwhile work.

The second secret, the Way of the Beaver, explains why people should control the process of achieving their goals.

The third and final secret, the Gift of the Goose, which adds enthusiasm to the first two secrets.

wouldn't hurt any of us.

Souths would survive but would not be as bigger club without a celebrity owner and worldwide icon.

Russell Crowe has been good for attracting the likes of Burgess and some sponsorship deals, but he no longer tips in his own money, and is no longer really required for securing major sponsors or gun players. The club makes a profit primarily on the back of our strong membership base and good policies, which Crowe pushed, but is no longer required to pilot.

Warrington are doing reasonably well with what they have, but like just about every other club they are afraid of plunging into the abyss. So marketing is a bit of an afterthought because of the outlay required. It's seen as a gamble rather than a sound investment. A shame really. Having a rich backer whom you know is in for the long haul, rather than just saying they are, is one way of getting past those fears. The other route would see a central fund for all clubs, spent by the RFL, catering to marketing and other areas such as club investments or development funds. But then, that would require the RFL to be forward thinking as well. They have improved greatly in recent years, but matters needs to be further developed.

If the RFL or NRL were forward-thinking they would look to doing all of their marketing, design and video production in-house, enabling a much greater output for a similar cost factor to what is currently being spent.

Only in Rugby League.

Glad Wigan and Widnes fans can offer congratulations, Thanks and well done guys.

I agree - an RL club making an operating profit is good news as it is unfortunately rare. Can't understand why it should be turned into a negative or trolling session.

Notwithstanding the rivalry between our clubs, I have a lot of respect for the Warrington club and their management who have clearly made such strides on and off the field from where they were 10 - 15 years ago. SL would be better if it had more success stories like Warrington.
