I think most people, apart from the Mathers-haters realise that at times fullbacks will be made to look stupid. Occupational hazard I'm afraid.

In fairness - Mathers does it more frequently than most (to provide a little balance - his attacking play and link into the line has been impressive this season)

We are now getting to the hot end of the season, the big teams are out to get one over each other and they will use whatever tactics they think will work for them.

If the tactics a team decides on is to go for the rough stuff then that is a gamble they will take in so far as what the ref will do and if the ref does do something, or even nothing considering citing, how serious will it be.

Leeds as the team playing catch up, both in the table and on the field, where the ones who have to risk their arm, Wigan are the ones uarenteed the easier ride to the GF (doesn't maen they'll make it).

Leeds tactics to try and step up the play-off ladder may back-fire badly. They lost, so the tactics failed, they also could now be without a couple (I suspect one though) players for next weeks semi.

At least Leeds do have a plan B, thuggery.

I'll await the 'RFL needs to protect the little men' thread after Abletts 'challenge' on Tomkins given the type and level of scrutiny any bit of foul play from Wigan seems to get.

Lots of calls for the ref tonight, in fairness wigan deserved the two points but i think the game was closer than the final scoreline. As for the ablett/tomkins incident, it was a bad one, whether he mistimed it or not. Having said that the R.F.L have set a precedent with the Tomkins/Myler incident,

"used his forearm to make a dangerous contact with the neck and head of opponent. His opponent was in a vulnerable and defenceless position"

The r.f.l have set their stall out early doors allowing o'loughlin and j.tomkins off with a slap on the the wrist for cowardly late shots. Stop whinging, this is where it gets tough and if you don't like it you may as well concede now.(like you did in the challenge cup)

It would be worth knowing what the vr's role is in pointing out foul play. There should be some guidelines somewhere on that. Having watched it again, the most damning angle is from behind Sam, where it is clear he has caught the ball, Ablett looks at him and picks his spot. He isn't challenging for the ball at all at that point. That is worse than Howell's which was a careless swing, and should see him miss Leeds' Challenge Cup exit. Bailey's is harder for mine, as raising a leg is very dangerous indeed by must be hard to prove.

Wigan were terrific last night, particularly when we threw the ball around. An Indian summer for September and the start of October would come in very handy indeed. I am even re-considering my opinion that we stand no chance of making Old Trafford if we have to play Leeds again.

Enjoyed the game last night, would have been even better if the weather had been dry.

On the day the best team won, but it would have been very interesting if Hall had scored that try with 5 mins left think we would have been looking at a draw then.

With regard to the Ablett challange, personally I think the RFL have already set the stall out with the number of players from severa teams who have got away with bad "tackles" this year. If that match was played in the Championship then he would have walked and would prob get 4 games. In Super League he may get a big fine and maybe 1 game.

thoroughly enjoyed last night's game. Confirmed to me what I've thought about the Pies all season. As for Ganson, he's just not very good at times, any other accusations are daft. Bailey repeated what Stuart Fielden did to Jason Smith a few years since. He got 2 matches and Smith missed a season with a shattered sternum. Ablett should have walked, that challenge was appalling. Surprised nobody's mentioned Ryan Hall's disappearing act when Gleeson scored. He's not very bright that lad.

aye, better half picked that up and replayed it for me - don't know what possessed him to come inside, and then him and Webb (IIRC) bumped into each other pantomime stylee

Come on then bacon brains, highlight where I have whinged or complained, highlighting Leeds tactics isn't either otherwise saying the used an offload game or one out football would be whinging.

As for your last line did you actually watch last nights game. :D

I really, really don't get people at times... Last night, the right team won, and won convincingly. Yes, the ref had a poor match and, yes, Leeds will most likely lose a couple of players once the reports are reviewed but surely that's no excuse for calling the ref "bent" or similar.

If he missed an incident then he missed it, he can't spot it all and he has a completely different angle to everyone else watching. What do people want? Do they want him to guess based on how loud the crowd's condemnation is?

In my years of moderating this forum, I've heard Steve Ganson being called "bent" against probably every side in Super League, including St Helens where Saints fans accuse him of over-penalising them to prove he's not "bent". Now, either he's "bent" against every side in the league depending on the one-eyed views of those watching or the people calling him "bent" are simply letting their one-eyed emotions get the better of them.

If you want to call a referee ###### or otherwise criticise his performance then please feel free, we won't interfere unless it gets truly out of hand. We will not tolerate people ranting about referees being bent. If posters want to keep doing that then please go find another forum where it's acceptable.

feel a bit sorry for hall as the 2marker should have split 1left and 1right so there would of been no need for hall to stay there but they both went right because the back marker was webb an he had to run to the posts to cover any kicks but by time hall noticed this it was a bit late

Enjoyed the game last night. Thought it was a good old slog with plenty of physicality and some silky skills thrown in from both teams.

Wigan were two scores better than us for sure.

Ablett is def in trouble and should be, he could of pulled out.

Leeds miss disko.

Ganson made suspect calls for oth teams not just Leeds. And he never looks acros the line to see if anyone is offside.

Personally I think we will still be there therabouts come the playoffs.

Hall's blunder was comical enough in itself, but the Keystone Kops collision between him and Webb was the icing on the cake.

Pleased to inform you i don't where the same smoke glasses either.Wigan were the better team on the night no doubt due to some abject defending. As for ablett he's not a dirty player as his record shows but should have been sent off straight away, couldn't see the baily incident so cannot coment.I wish posters on here would look at their own teams before making posts like "dirty leeds" & "plan b thuggery" every team has its cheap shot merchants to mention a few lauaki hull, joel tompkins wigan, wilkins saints, morley wolves etc.

It's quite funny to state that leeds plan B is thuggery when wigans plan A has been thuggery for most of the season. Compared to one high shot from ablett, wigans 3 high shots, one grapple tackle and one late shot was not bad for 80 minutes of rugby. ;)

Nice to see you sticking to your promise of not boring us stupid with your crazy obsessive referee views.

Nothing crazy about Ganson influence on last nights result.

I think it says it all when you supporters in the pub who are normally telling me to shut up for going on about the referee when themselves are calling Ganson every name name under the sun.

Ganson always has been a ###### referee who just can't resist the spotlight.

You're kidding yourself. Wigan were at least two scores better than your lot. The conditions and the fact that Leeds benefited from some very dubious refereeing calls saved you from an embarrassment IMO.

I'd be interested to know what your "very dubious calls " were exactly. The big decisions he had to make were,

A] Ablett on tomkins

B] Ryan halls disallowed try

C] gouldings knock on directly before gleesons try

D] coleys sin binning.

The one he got badly wrong was coleys sin binning for me. He was committed to the tackle and ganson misread the situation. He also missed gouldings knock on before gleesons try, but the touch judge was stood next to him and should have seen that, i wouldn't blame ganson for that. As for halls try, yes he knocked on. He was also correct to put ablett on report because there's no way he could have seen exactly where ablett caught tomkins in real time. If you think he's missed some massive game changing decisions then you were watching a different game to me.

Carl Ablett isn't a dirty player (even for Leeds!) but that deserves at least a 2 match ban. It doesn't matter that it was on 'The Precious One', no attempt at tackling, just a forearm to the face.

I hate Ryan Bailey, I think he's a blight on Super League, and on the Leeds side, and if he were to never play in Super League again I'd be happy, but I think his raised knee was poor technique at a time when everyone was giddy and he'll recieve a warning letter.

Joel Tomkins should also get a ticking off for charging in like that, brotherly love and all that but he can't lose his head like that. Slapped wrist sufficient.

The rest of the game, pretty standard stuff. Including the compulsory forward passes!

I wonder if when arguing your like of R/L to non-believers you ever claim it is not so much a 'contact sport as rather a collision sport'?

I agree that both instances in the game that you typify were bad, especially the one by Ablett and neither do I condole malicious or deliberately dirty play, as these incidents were.

But an over sanitised R/L is not for me and it is one reason why I prefer the NRL and its content, as the tolerance levels are better from their refs and do allow the game mainly more flow.

On a personal note, I do not hate Ryan Bailey, not one bit.

In fact I like his style which is combative, with a no-quarter given, nor expected, attitude.

Precisely the manner in which a R/L forward is expected to perform, if you prefer the non-combative version, so be it but for me when that takes over I will watch only the NRL where players of Baileys ilk are more the norm than the exception.

That one alone had a major influence on the outcome. It enable Leeds to turn what would have been a rout into a damage limitation exercise.

Wigan were faster and more aggressive on the night, although the scoreline flattered them a little.

Here's a serious question for BOAB:

When Leeds knocked Wigan out of the cup you were quick to condemn Lee Smith for his attitude when he scored, after leuluais try last night, Joel Tomkins stood in front of the Carnegie stand and shouted"F###ing get that into you" aimed into the stand and not the players. Is that acceptable and is it any different to what Lee Smith did?

Thank you for your valuable contribution.
