If a French club is invited into Super League for 2012, which club would you want it to be?

Recommended Posts

Paris and Toulouse are the only serious contenders.

Give your reasons why, as if you were advising Richard Lewis and Nigel Wood.

I personally think one French Club is enough for now.

OK. Would you favour a second French club in 2015? If so, which one?

I raise this question, because if the RFL are considering a second French club (under the "invitation to a foreign club" category), they are faced with two contenders. They have to decide which will be the most successful.

I don't think either would be ready for 2015 never mind 2012.

No room for another French club in SL.

We already have one that is doing a cracking job of providing a pension plan for old Australians, why should we need another?

Cue someone saying 100 year old Clubs do that also. But we are talking about expansion Clubs, not the Heartlands..........

Please, for the sake of expansionists everywhere, just stop making multiple posts per week about which French teams you'd like to see in Super league. Your insistence that they should be shoe horned into SL in 2012 is actually damaging the credibility of the Toulouse bid among supporters who would otherwise be very open to the idea. Have you not noticed that people on this forum are now actively taking up the contrary position just to spite you?

Which multiple posts per week are you imagining? I have not asked this question or anything like it for months.

I recently posted a possible long term goal for Super League, which obviously included several French clubs, and one Spanish club, to be integrated over a 15-18 year period, along with a lot more English and Celtic clubs.

This is a very different thread which is focused on the next specific French club decision at hand, one which the RFL is seriously considering since both Toulouse and Paris SF have indicated their desire to join Super League..

I know that there are several spiteful flatcappers on here who don't wnat to contribute to the discussion intelligently. But it is a discussion that the RFL has had and will have in the near future, given the overtures of Paris SF and the long term ongoing applications of Toulouse. So there is no reason why we should not have the same discussion on this board.

Toulouse in 2015 but only if the new ground and business plan are ready.

I agree with you on the business plan.

However the ground reconstruction is a Catch 22. I can imagine that the French government entities responsible for paying for the ground reconstruction will not fund the project unless they are sure that Toulouse will be in Super League.

So they talk behind closed doors and it wouldn't be the first time that this has happend after Keighley and Widnes were both harshly treated with by the RFL.

I do agree that we need a second to French club to help and sustain the Catalans Dragons.

FFS albert give it a rest you are becoming extremely boring and predictable with your ramblings about wanting french clubs in super league.

"Why is Napoleon crying ?" said one sailor to the other, "poor ###### thinks he's being exiled to st helens" came the reply.

Gawd, your transparent.

One more club other than Widnes mooted for SL does not give you less of a chance of getting in SL Jack.

Widnes tick all boxes apart from geography, have a sugar daddy the RFL were fools to ignore last time but won't this, RFL are committed to an NL club coming up and your lot are the only ones that in any way fit the bill.

I know Catalans stole your SL place and Crusaders and Salford stole it again.

But your home and dry mate. Relax

So why not relax with a second trip to France next year?? which one - Paris or Toulouse? Do you fancy a weekend in the historical and sophisticated city, or a weekend in the sunny relaxed south???

I think that the dilemma for the RFL is that:

1. Toulouse is very serious, and wants to be in it for the long term, has a good junior structure and a relationship with other regional clubs as possible feeders, but is a bit suspect on the financial side at he moment (though that may be because of the bad economic climate we are all facing).

2. Paris SF is a completely different kind of candidate. Its backers have loads of casino money, and the prospect of a good stadium in the national capital. But SF has no junior structures yet, and its long term commitment is not as certain as that of the Toulouse management .

This makes it a very hard choice for the RFL, whether they are considering a French club for 2012 or 2015.

You can't turn down big money men and you can't turn down any area where junior RL can be strong.

Damn shame both ingredients aren't in one prospect.

Agree although I suspect the RFL will go for the club with the money

Why change the thread from Greg Inglis to a French Club 14 minutes after posting?

Occasionally I had time for your questions - not now.

Another factor that the RFL will consider is which application is more likely to win a better and more generous TV contract than exists now. This could ease the financial burden on the RFL regarding French rugby league in general, as well as the cost of bringing in a new club.

That issue would favour Paris I would imagine, given the special entrepreneurial flair of its owner, the mercurial Max Guazzini.

Entrepreneurial flair is not a feature of the Toulouse management, though Carlos Zalduendo has an excellent relationship with all the power centres in Toulouse, and could be expected to raise more money when the French economy recovers.

French TV will be interested in a Toulouse franchise --- much more than it is in the Catalans franchise --- but less than it will be in a Paris franchise.
