Serious question. Would you have sacrificed that team and the trophies they won for a slightly lesser talented team and less trophies if it meant avoiding all the problems Widnes have suffered since?

Easy answer, No.

Any club who has a serious period of success in this game usually seems to end up skint.

Come to think of it, most of them end up skint whether they've had success or not.

Just because you think everyone hates you doesn't mean they don't.

Wigan 1987-95 were the most dominant and ruthless team ever in the British game.

What that Wigan team achieved was fantastic but is it true that for part or the whole of that period they were the only full time team?

No, that is not true.

Wigan were not even the first club to go full-time pro - that honour fell to Leeds.

No, that is not true.

Wigan were not even the first club to go full-time pro - that honour fell to Leeds. And it was all an RFL backed conspiracy.

Exactly my point. With due respect to the other teams, most neutrals were desperate to see a Wigan-Widnes Wembley final during that period.

Definitely! It would have been very interesting.

On the issue of exchanging the success of those years for financial security...

Of course not but it is the big problem of professional team sport in the UK, clubs building teams made up of players that they can't afford for more than a short period. Having said that, the club they were all up against at the time, Wigan, were the biggest culprits.

Whether they were the best attacking team to grace these shores or not, that Widnes team was something special. A shame they haven't been able to sustain a place at the top level recently.

Oh come on,let's not get ridiculous!!!!!!!!

Better than the Huddersfield "team of all talents"?
Better than Wakefield in the 60's?
Better than wigan from 1987-1995 when they won virtually every trophy going?
Better than Saints,Bradford Bulls and Leeds since super league started?
Better than the Australian national touring sides?

I could go on and on,but I think by now you should see my point, which is that your statement has a credibility rating of zero.

Ok, so i wasnt including touring australians, and was talking about english club rugby. My bad. However my statement stands and the rugby we played in the time we are talking about has drawn a number of respected people in the game to state that it is some of the best theyve seen. I agree with them.

I could also go on and on, but the tone of your response tells me you have an intelligence rating of zero.

If you haven't seen it already, here's a collection of Offiah tries. He may be a media berk these days, but created some magic moments back then.

I have started to upload the full game in 7-9 minute segments on my Youtube Channel if anyone wants to view them.

You can see the try's in context of the full game, plus obviously the Canberra try's
Widnes - Super League's newest Club, and Cheshire's Original Glamour Club. Watch out Warrington, we're back !
