Magic Weekend handpicked fixtures

Recommended Posts

For the Magic Weekend on the opening day of the season, the fixtures will be handpicked.

In my opinion there needs to be an element of spice, and evenly matched sides, both for fans to go believing they any side can win, as well as for the fairness of competing for 2 pts for all sides in this extra fixture.

It being the opening weekend also throws in the ripped up form book, the renewed optimism for a new season, and the first SL appearances of new signings for their clubs.

With all of these in mind, I would go with the following:

Leeds Rhinos v Wigan Warriors

St Helens v Warrington Wolves

Hull FC v Hull Kingston Rovers

Wakefield Wildcats v Castleford Tigers

Huddersfield Giants v Bradford Bulls

Crusaders RL v Salford City Reds

Harlequins RL v Catalans Dragons

In this order:

Saturday:

Hull FC v Hull KR

Harlequins v Catalans

St Helens v Warrington

Sunday:

Huddersfield v Bradford

Wakefield v Castleford

Crusaders v Salford

Leeds v Wigan

Personally I'd try sandwiching the smaller games getting some from the previous games, and some turning up for the last game, as well as those there for all games, like me.

Not really as teams improve over a season, Catalans may be red hot next year playing someone like Quins who look like they will be in turmoil next year.

???????????

You mentioned playing against a team where you finished next to the previous season.

This year drew the 1 -8 out of the hat and then 9- 14

Saints finished 3 places above KR

Wires finished 2 places above Salford

both teams got snotted, by a big big margin.

To be honest there is no easy answer.

That for me is the fairest way to get the best games on the weekend rather than cherry picking derby matches. If you took the league as things stand now the fixtures for next year would be.

Wigan v Wire

Saints v Hull

Leeds v Hudds

HKR v Crusaders

Cas v Wakey

Bradford v Quins

Salford v Catalan

That fixture list isnt bad and the same system could be followed every year to prevent the same teams playing each other each year.

Whichever system you choose you're always going to get some fixtures that are, er, not as attractive as the others. That's the problem with having the whole round of matches played in one stadium. The RFL should cherry pick a couple of games for Cardiff and leave the rest at home.

If its going to be a season opener

CC Winners v's GF Winners - Leeds Rhinos Vs Leeds Rhinos

CC RU v's GF RU - Warrington Wolves Vs Crusaders

Then try to get as many derby games as poss.

I believe this would promote a level of fairness with 2 SL points up for grabs.

Saints v Wigan

Wire v Saints

Not going to work :P

Sorry to break it to you, but there's absolutely no chance of this happening, as I realluy can't see Saints winning the Challenge Cup this year

Not sure sacrificing Leeds & Warrington for Crusaders is really a good move.

I think it would be better to give Crusaders a winable game rather than a glamour tie. That's not to say they wouldn't have a chance against the Wolves, but match em up more evenly and I think a revitalised Salford next year v Crusaders at Millennium Stadium would be a good enticing fixture.
