Couldn't believe it, just watching the replay of the Saints v Wire game ( 37 mins) and the scousers are singing the Rugby Union anthem Swing low, sweet chariots!!

Can anyone explain why the Saints 'fans' would sing this Union tune?

Makes a change from foooooorrrrrwwwwwwwaarrrrrrrrrrdddddddddddd

A lot of Yorkshiremen believe that when God created the world, he made it with perfect balance.
He balanced the hot areas with the cold areas. the dry areas with the wet areas.
And, in creating Yorkshire, he created the most glorious place on earth - full of majestic beauty and sporting giants.........and for balance he created....... Lancashire.

I can't imagine it was anything other than a sarcastic swipe at the union game for it's obsession with kicking even when tries are begging.

Oh and whilst we are at it, Saints may be many things, but let's not group them in with that lot. They're a league team, so they're a class above other clubs in the country who aren't for that reason at least. Same with Wire, Quins or whoever.

More than not the Saints elect to go for a try from a penalty, rather than a goal. Last night they went for several goals, hence the singing in mocking fashion out of fun. Simple. cool.gif

Even the Sky commentary team got this.

We must assume that Wendall cannot keep up with the intellectual rigour of Eddie and Stevo.
Cheer up, RL is actually rather good

biggrin.gif It isn't rocket science really why they sing the said song. rolleyes.gif Perhaps Wendall isn't living on the same planet! rolleyes.gif

I seem to recall the song sung at a rugby league international!

After the Union lot won the World Cup, a rendition of the song started up during the GB-Aus at Huddersfield, it was quickly drowned out with a chorus of boo's.

nothing wrong with being a toff
and it isn't crappy-it's an african american slave song, albeit appropriated by rugby union for not very nice reasons

well done Saints. Warrington choke again.

Quite right, it's a beautiful song, sadly tarnished by the England RU fans who thought it would be fun to sing it when black winger Chris Oti scored a hat-trick:

"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" has been sung by English rugby players and fans for some decades[4] , but became associated with the English national side, in particular, in 1988. Coming into the last match of the 1988 season, against Ireland at Twickenham, England had lost 15 of their previous 23 matches in the Five Nations Championship. The Twickenham crowd had only seen one solitary England try in the previous two years and at half time against Ireland they were 0-3 down. However during the second half England scored six tries to give them a 35-3 win. Three of the tries came in quick succession from Chris Oti, a black player making his Twickenham debut. A group from the Benedictine school Douai started to sing a rugby club favourite the gospel hymn "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" in honour of their new hero, large sections of the crowd joined in. The song is still regularly sung at matches by supporters.[4][5][6] There are associated gestures, sometimes used in a drinking game, which requires those who wrongly perform the gestures to buy a round of drinks." Not the first time the "pop" side has sung this; it's a little bit of irony when Saints kick for goal at a penalty. First time I heard it was the 08 playoff semi when Saints beat Leeds and Longy kept kicking for goal whenever there was a penalty. Althought the loudest cheer that night came from the pop side when Leeds, who had been pretty hopeless, eventually managed to score a try; a very funny moment although of course the Rhinos had the last laugh.
