Yes, but Manchester's getting new fences for all its gypsy sites.

My old school used the Clough for its x-country runs. Bloody awful it was. When we got a bit older and bolder, we used to nip into the Charlestown for a pint on the way down and join the rest as they were heading back up to school. (Actually, we only did it once - someone grassed us up and we got the rollocking of a lifetime.

So is Manchester to be fair - and I say that as someone who moved there permanently after 3 years of student life. Just watch the 2/3 miles around the city centre turn into a ghost town at Easter/Christmas/Summer, especially towards South Manchester.
I know Sev wasn't a fan earlier in the thread, but Didsbury is actually quite nice. Some stuff is a bit pricey, but I'd say it was the best place to live in the city if you are a Young Professional type.
The pubs round there, especially West Didsbury, are a bit pricy I agree. One of the pubs there has the biggest profit in the north or something daft - after getting a round in there the other week it isn't hard to see why.

Aye, but you were a conscript - I was in my 20s and the x-country (Manchester and District XC League - for Middleton Harriers) was my hobby! I spent my leisure time ploughing through the mud!
I still perversely enjoy this sort of stuff some 30 years after, but these days I limit myself to orienteering - you can at least stop and use the excuse that you're consulting your map/compass.

There's an annual 8 mile obstacle race through the clough near Prestwich. John M's nephew tried to rope me in to it last year but I poltiely declined.

I'm boycotting Tetleys for this reason. But TBF Holts and Hydes are not only a pleasant drink, but they compare favourably pricewise with much of what's on the market - except Sam Smiths which is pretty good and amazingly cheap.
Boddingtons used to be a nice drop too when it was brewed at the Stangeway's brewery by Boddingtons.
I'm not that chauvinistic about Yorkshire beer - except for Tim Taylors Landlord which IMO is the finest bitter beer brewed in the UK bar none.

Its easy for him - He's 6 ft 6in or so! Has he not roped you into the coast-to-coast?
Of course, being born, bred (!?!?!) and educated ( even more ?!?!?!?) there, I'd go for Manchester any time.
