The noise from a few idiots during the minutes silence was a disgrace and embarrasssing for the proud game of rugby league.

It was and not acceptable but however it could have been worse. As much as I prefer a minutes silence to pay my respects it seems that the only way to drown out these morons is to have a minutes applause.

Sadly, with 75,000 people, a few will not care. Especially with the controversy he brought. It was ok, but as mentioned, it only takes one or two.

From where I was sat it sounded like quite alot of the noise was from people still entering the stadium from the kiosk/toilets who may have been unaware the minute was in progress, didn't hear anyone booing wich i thaught may happen. to keep 70,000 people many who are drunk quiet will never be easy. part of the problem is you can't tell somebody to shut up without breaking the silence yourself.

Sounded to me like a loan voice, joined by people telling him/her to be quiet, may not even have been derogatory...........in a crowd of 70000+, forgot the minority

Even though our utter, unquestioned dominance in the sport has ended, all Wiganers believe that we are really just indulgently letting the other teams win for a while in order to make it more interesting.

It was always going to happen in a crowd that size. The problem with a minutes silence is that one voice can ruin it and the larger the crowd the more of a chance there is some idiot who can't keep their opinions to themself for one moment.

I have heard elsewhere that it was actually coming from the wigan end, before anyone starts pointing fingers at the saints contingent and making out it is a club thing.

I was in the wigan end and thats where the noise was but like i said the noise seemed to be coming from under the stands and then other fans telling them to shut up etc as the latecomers were taking their seats.

Elsewhere on the web, several witnesses confirming it was in the Wigan end but was in fact one or two of a group of lads dressed in fancy dress army gear from the wrong side of my fair city who were off their heads.

I hope they are proud of themselves this morning. Morons.

We were at the Wigan end, sat in front of a load of Hull supporters dresssed as Max Wall - it wasn't them although they were well p!ssed. It appeared to be coming from behind us and sounded like a fight to me. However, everyone else observed the silence brilliantly. A credit to the game.

It wasn't Hull FC fans. I thought I dropped a big enough hint, tbh.

I've seen it happen before where one or two idiots set it off and then it's made worse by people shushing them or booing it.

I remember a similar instance during a Widnes-Wire derby where there was a minutes silence for the Queen Mother. A couple of Widnes idiots started shouting and people reacted in the same way at the Widnes end. The idiots reply was, 'she never did anything for me.'

I think we should move towards minutes applause where possible. It might be giving in to them but in reality the idiots aren't going to go away just because we want them to and all it does is spoil the moment. It's not just idiots shouting either. I've noticed an increase in people sending text messages because they think it's funny when they go off in the middle of it. I've also heard people shouting outside the ground on purpose.

There were a load of fans dressed like what I took to be Roman Centurians - could have been them, they had a drum and were making a helluva a racket on the OT concourse.

Whoever it was and for whatever reason the minutes silence wasn't totally observed I'm pleased that your post exonerated the Saints end who observed it impeccably.

There was however one moron sat/stood near me up in the north stand who,s very words ,heard very plainly were "Show some respect Scouse tw-ts". He said this during the one minutes silence which ironically made him the bigger moron of all.

Just spoken to RoyBoy who's recovering at his Manchester hotel this morning.

He was one of those dressed as Max Wall. It was your description of their state of inebriation that gave me the clue. biggrin.gif

Couldn't agree more. We were sat in the North Stand near the flank that Wigans started from. Most of what I heard was idiot 'shhh'ing and yelling "Shut up!" at the top of their voices. I don't care if 1-2 morons are breakng the silence as you can't hear them too much in a 75,000 seated stadium as if they're near you to can stare at them & shake your head while being silent, whereas 30 odd people 'shhhh'ing & yelling "Shut up!" really cuts through the silence & by spending 15-20 seconds of the minutes silence 'attempting' to quieten down someone breaching the silence you in turn have not observed it either.

Someone posted on here a while ago that the reason that football have gone to a minutes applause was because they powers that be couldn't guarantee a minutes silence due to the pratts in the crowds - I think we can still be proud of our game and supporters that we can still hold a minutes silence and 99% of the time its impecably observed.

I'll confirm that the noise did come from the Wigan end, overall the silence was very well observed.

With such a large crowd and an evening kick-off there was always going to be some idiot or idiots in the crowd, but it didn't seem like a deliberate attempt to disrupt the mark of respect more somebodoy hadn't realised what was going on as they came in.
