Psycho was at the grand final sat next to Steve Mac and I mused for a few seconds about whether he would have made it in rugby league had he been brought up in the right area and pro soccer had somehow overlooked him.

The commitment and personal courage were there. I don't know about the rest.

I know which "Psycho" I'd have preferred for England at stand-off today dry.gif

Nice line.

Not a chance.

He may have been a "psycho" in football but wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes in our game.

On 13/2/2013, Hull City's owners the Allams, released a statement in their position as the owners of the KC Stadium Management Committee. One line in this statement read as follows....

"The SMC's principal responsibility is to remain neutral"

How can you say that.
If he had played it as a kid and been used to the game.

I played football til I was 22 then a lad I played football with introduced me to RL and I didn't look back. I was a "defensive" midfielder, but soon adapted to RL and I played with a lot of lads who were also handy footballers, skills liek quick feet, pace and eye ball cordination are tranferrable, you just got then learn how to throw yourself at a 16 stone bloke. Footballers are not a bunch of soft panises, that so many genrealise about. It's a physical game and they are top class athletes, I believe there are many that would make the grade in RL given a background in the game.

Footy 'used to' be a physical game pre-2000 (? It certainly was in the '90s) but I watched a little of a few of the Champions League games last week & realised that professional footballers don't tackle each other anymore & if a player does tackle a player with the ball but ever-so-slightly clips their opponant's foot as well as the ball the ref blows the whistle for a free-kick. Ridiculous.

I don't know if Pearce would have been a good RL player but aggression can actually be pretty detrimental to a player in our game.

Surely that's England Goalies?... biggrin.gif (joking)

I was reading in one of the papers yesterday that one of the St Helens lads was in the Everton academy with Rooney. Who was that?

Well it was '92 when I started playing RL and more or less gave up football. yeah European games is a different matter, they'll putting skirts on them next. The English game is all about pace and physical side of the game, or used to be. And it's not that they are soft these footballers that throw themselves around at the slightest touch, they are bending the rules to gain advantage.

I can't remember when I watched a UK top level footy match (Barcleys Premiership & nPower Championship?), or any other UK footy in a long long time but watching a few football world cup games & the UCL games I realise some of the footwork & skill is fantastic (most of the footy WC was pretty darn dull though) but as an RL fan the pace doesn't impress me that much apart from the occasional break up-field.

Surely diving is cheating rather than just 'gaining an advantage'? I'd call that cheating.

I agree it is cheating but with all that is at stake if a player can get away with it he will, it's the fault of the authorities for not clamping down on it.

I thought it was the job of refs to penalise cheating in any sport?...

Yes and the ruling bodies to make sure that the refs uphold the laws corectly, as I said the authorities.

Different to this, but Aaron Ramsey was on St. Helens books when he was younger.

I think its impossible to say at this stage. Two vastly different games, but I'd like to think Pearce could have made it, he never backed down.

You can't make a decision on whether a football would have made it at RL, simply based on aggression. Ryan Giggs hardly an aggressive footballer. He was, however, a handy RL player on his youth.
