Contract not renewed, he was told a few weeks before the end of the season.

From the link you posted, it says that he was assistant coach this year

I find it strange that a bloke of 25, with extensive Super League experience and no apparent injuries chooses to retire from playing.
However, I find it even more strange that he's handed a head coach's position after a year assisting another inexperienced coach. I realise the Skolars have limited resources but it's not that long ago that they were able to attract people like Latham Tawhai from up north.

Must admit I thought Joe took the Under 16`s at Skolars last year although the link on this thread suggests otherwise. Being a local lad it would be great to see him succeed.

At the end of the day I think this is a very wise move. The club can't get much worse than recent seasons, and I don't think having ANZAC coaches helps develop RL in an area still in RL infancy
Joe Mbu is a local lad, and that will add some weight in attracting young local lads into the Skolars set up. It is also good from a PR perspective, and he should be going into local schools.
I think this might be a masterstroke

Joe is 27 in November. He has also played 300 games of league. He was also born within 500 metres of New River stadium. He is the Skolars most successful ever player and has played at Quins, Hull, Leeds, Huddersfield and Doncaster. Hes been assistant coach at the Skolars and worked with quins juniors. Good luck to him.
