How good a summariser is Ellery Hanley despite his desire to stay out of the limelight for all his career. If you don't believe me watch here and the Times of our Lives Show on Sky last night when he stole the show.

In my opinion Sky should sign him up, he's a rare media celebrity who is known country wide after his stint on Dancing on Ice. Much better than his disco dancing chum Martin Offiah! biggrin.gif

Anyone else rate Ellery or not?

I've just watched the clip, very interesting.

I don't think he would be a good commentator, the words don't seem to flow freely enough - a few too many cliches too which didn't come out right either.

However, the passion he obviously still has for the game is fantastic. And the regard in which he is held by everyone in th game, and the high profile he has in the media means that he would be an excellent guest, or maybe some other public role in the game for the governing body perhaps.

Its a shame he isn't used as some kind of ambassador for the game. Such passion in such a high profile ex-player should not be allowed to go to waste!

He didn't answer the questions properly, he was twice asked to describe the rivalry beytween the clubs and twice spoke more about tactics.
"surely they've got to try somthing different now, maybe the little chip over the top?2

i think he'd be good.. doesnt seem the type to hold back his opinions.. which potentially could cause a bit of a stir at times.. Stevo just plays at being controversial. But someone like Ellery probably would be. which would create debate.. which is good.

he was also on bbc radio 4 on the morning of the game ,he seems to be preparing himself for a stint in the media.
He has been spending lots of time at David Loyds sports centre in north Leeds
but you and I weve been through that and this is not our fate.
So let us so let us not talk falsely now.
The hour is getting late

He would be a refreshing change.......................... for about four months when he would flounce off after being snubbed in some obscure manner.

Commentators need to be the support act not the headliners, and I think Ellery finds this difficult. he does take himself very, very seriously you know!

An amazing turnaround for someone who, back in his playing days, was mediaphobic to an unusual degree.

When he wasn't actually refusing to talk to the media at all, he used to give the most grudging comments. There was an interview with him a few years ago on the BBC's 'Inside Sport' which has to rank as one of the worst ever broadcast.
"Journalists are meant to be neutral, for God's sake." - Stephen 'Wiggy' Jones

"Perhaps it would be better that future criticism of sports be made on the narrow basis of what is being discussed, without reference to other sports, unless those sports offer a solution to the problem in hand." - Brian 'Pigface' Moore

"What happens in rugby union? A player takes the ball, moves forward a little and gets tackled. A whole load of players then roll about on the ground. Pheep! The referee gives a penalty." - Simon Barnes

I seem to remember that on the Lions Tour in 1992 there was a big stink over Ellery being allowed to work for Channel 9 after he was ruled out of the tour by injury. He didn't last long on Ch9 as, so the story goes, the Australian public couldn't understand what he was saying. God knows what they'd make of Ray French!

I also remember him 'signing' for some American Football team in London and giving them plenty of good publicity. All very ironic considering he could barely bring himself to speak to the RL media at the time.

He knows what he is talking about but he is awful at speaking.

How many times did he say magnificent is that time of our lives. As someone else said he dosnt asnwer questions just says magnificent all the time

Well respected and I would imagine great in a dressing room but Offiah and Edwards very much better speakers

I think there were two particularly large assets in that clip.

Possibly the way he talked the game up, and the length of time given to the final, possibly not.
Super League, Championship, the play-offs, Challenge Cup, and World Cup.
