Did anyone see Joel Tomkins. today step out of the line way before the national anthem ended!!!

It was bloody embarrasing!! Funny though! Westwood was chuckling away when he noticed Joel walking back thinking the anthem had ended after verse 1! This will be a QOS moment to savour!

Next time he should learn the words to God Save the Queen!

Err, it was an odd version. I don't remember that last few lines being repeated again like some lame X Factor audition in the proper 'un.

This thread will end up as 'God Save the Queen shouldn't be sung as our anthem before the game anyway, it's too royalist. Jerusalem/Land of Hope and Glory/the Hokey Cokey is much better'.

At least Joel Tomkins knows where the line is.

God save the Queen shouldn't be sung not because it's too royalist but because it's not England's national anthem. It's Britain's national anthem.

England's national anthem is Land of Hope and Glory. It's just that no one knows the words to it.

Bluff.

The real English National Anthem is Barwick Green

As well as the tune being universally known, it has the advantage of having no lyrics to remember.

Better still, let's have the Camberwick Green song as our anthem. All together now. "Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew........."

England's national anthem is Land of Hope and Glory. It's just that no one knows the words to it.

Incorrect, Land of Hope and Glory was adopted by the England soccer team in the shameful Don Revie era. it was soon abandoned. Jerusalem is the one used by the England Cricket team and also features at RL events. The case for Jerusalem is that it mentions England in the lyrics. The case against is that it was originally a baleful hymn.
The case for England having an anthem other than GSTQ the British National Anthem as you point out has been rolling on in Sporting circles for some time and has absolutely nothing to do with peoples views about the Monarchy. So I trust the usual suspects won't try taking this thread off topic with their political views and that the moderators ensure this.
That said I do believe in the 2000 world cup England used a diferent national anthem to GSTQ and I remember in the Fiji game at Headingley that the South Stand gave an impromptu rentition of GSTQ afterwards anyway.

As for Joel - Give the lad a break - it's his first "big" match on the international scerne and he was probably bricking it. and the nerves shone through. So I am less concerned about Joel stepping out of line than England failing to cross the TRY line it in the second half v the Maori.

I was sat on the Underground train, and there was a girl looking at me. She was pretty good looking, too, I thought, "something's wrong here - girls as hot as that don't take an interest in me".
Then she came over and said - in a really strong Cockney acent - "excuse me, are you Sam Tomkins?".
She asked me for my autograph, and I was made up...until she asked me to make it out to her boyfriend. I was gutted, I thought she wanted my number

Sam Tomkins - Rugby League Week 14.03.12

After we were well beaten by South Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2010, a coupl;e of kids maybe eight or nine years old took their Wests Tigers jerseys off as I was walking off the field and threw them at me. "What's this" I said "You can have the jersey" one of them said "we don't go for West Tigers anymore". Then they ran back to their parents who were laughing. That was difficult to take, having kids who look up to you do that. I just dropped the jerseys on the ground and kept walking. It's not like we go out and lose by 50 points on purpose

There are actually 2 verses to GSTQ, However only the first verse is normally used.

Why he repeated the last line again, I dont know, when Tomkins walked off that should have been the end.

Not a big deal anyway.

Poor old Joel Tomkins wasn't expecting the last line to be sung again - that's probably why Ben Westwood was laughing. Mind you, the guy singing it seemed to be having problems keeping in time with the music. It was a fairly quick paced version - not as quick as the version sung before the Cumbria v England game at Whitehaven though. We thought they'd played the song at the wrong speed.

In fact there are three verses to the official anthem.

Several others have also been added at various times, the longest lasting being an anti scottish one from 1745 praising general Wade.

Various others such as this:

From France and Pretender
Great Britain defend her,
Foes let them fall;
From foreign slavery,
Priests and their knavery,
And Popish Reverie,
God save us all.

have been tacked on along the way and just as quickly dropped.

The one sung on Saturday as has been pointed out was very weird and no shame on Tompkins for stepping out.

Wasn't it originally the preface to Blake's epic poem 'Milton'? turned into a 'baleful' hymn at a later time?

A bit less of the 'baleful hymn' if you don't mind, this is my old school song you're talking about; in itself sufficient reason for it to be the England anthem. That and the fact that I can still (just about) remember most of the words (with very little prompting) and give an excellent impression of of knowing it thoroughly. Is there anything more baleful than GSTQ?

I know the words to Land of Hope and Glory (which I consider as our English National Anthem) but I don't know the words to God Save the Queen, which I hate.

They sing Land of Hope and Glory at the Commonwealth Games anyway

If they were representing GB, the GSTQ would be appropriate but they are ENGLAND now and as such, should have an ENGLISH anthem IMO.

Can you imagine anyone making Scotland, Wales or NI sing GSTQ just because they are part of GB? Would never happen.

Should be Land of Hope and Glory for mine.

Since there isn't an official English National anthem I think they should just play whatevers currently at no.1 in the pop charts....and the players should dance......

There's 10 types of people in the world...those who understand binary and those that don't
