For example, he was held up as a beacon of good sportsmanship and fair play having played 748 professional games and never having been booked or sent off.
He was also hailed as a great footballer and a few years back was voted the greatest foreign player to have played in Serie A, ahead of people like Maradona, Platini, Zidane etc

well Albert came from the city ,but Tessa how long did she reside in Leeds?
there was a poll asking the citizens what kind of permanent tribute would they like for John Charles.
It was an overwhelming vote for a statue.
The people who voted for a statue were very disappointed when the council took the easy route and named the south leeds stadium after John Charles.
Yes the albert Godthorpe complex would have been better.
I wonder if they have got round to putting up a plaque in tribute to the hunslet 4 cups team yet?

goldthorpe had a longer career and was also a beacon of good sportsmanship and the side he led won all the trophies in the game in one season: they also played in the area where the sports centre is and Goldthoirpe came from the area
sanderson won olympic gold
did charles play all those games for leeds?

it isn't just the stadium it's the entire complex that's named after charles.
There is no commemoration whatsoever of ehat goldthorpe and his team did.

That there is no commemoration of Goldthorpe doesn't mean that John Charles is unworthy of the honour of having a sports complex named after him.
I cannot imagine why you think that Sanderson was more deserving.

I don't think sanderson was more deserving. She's just a famous spoprts person with leeds connections.
I didn't say that Charles is unworthy because goldthorpe and his team are uncommemorated. I just thin Goldtjhorpe is more worthy fopr reasons I've given. The lack of recognition for goldthorpe and his team is a digrace in its own right.

But John Charles (who's been targeted because he is a Leeds legend...)
- never booked/sent off
- holds a British transfer record
- one of the first British players to play abroad
- still a huge name in Italy
- regarded by other professionals as one of the all time greatest
Just a few, I can't see why he shouldn't be honoured over other Leeds sporting greats.

Also Ian McGeechan should be up there as a famous sportsman from Leeds whose achievements are bettered by very few.
PLAYING CAREER
Scotland: 32 appearances (debut 1972), nine as captain British & Irish Lions: 1974 -South Africa; 1977 -New Zealand
In 1974 the British Lions toured South Africa, with matches in South West Africa and Rhodesia (which would become Namibia and Zimbabwe respectively). The tour was a great success, the Lions winning 21 of their 22 matches and drawing the other. After winning the first three test matches, the Lions drew the final test to preserve their unbeaten record.
COACHING CAREER
Scotland: Assistant coach -1986-1988; Head coach -1988-1994; 1990 -Won Five Nations and Grand Slam
British & IRISH LIONS: Head coach
1989 -Australia
1993 -New Zealand
1997 -South Africa
2009 -South Africa Assistant coach
2005 -New Zealand
MISCELLANEOUS
1994 -Appointed Director of Rugby, Northampton Saints
1999 -Appointed Director of Rugby, Scotland
2005 -Appointed Director of Rugby, London Wasps
In 1986, McGeechan became the assistant Scotland coach to Derrick Grant and in 1988 he was promoted to coach. In 1990, his team won a Grand Slam victory in the Five Nations Championship. His forwards coach and partner was Jim Telfer.
McGeechan was the British and Irish Lions Head Coach in 1989, 1993, 1997 and 2009. In 2005, he coached the midweek side on the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand on the invitation of Sir Clive Woodward.
In 1994, McGeechan was appointed as Director of Rugby at Northampton and in 1999 replaced Jim Telfer as Scottish Director of Rugby.
McGeechan was appointed Director of Rugby at London Wasps in 2005 after an unsuccessful and unhappy period as the Scottish Director of Rugby. In his first season of 2005/06 he led Wasps to the Powergen Anglo Welsh Cup title, beating Llanelli Scarlets in the final at Twickenham. In his second season, London Wasps claimed the Heineken Cup.
In February 2010, McGeechan joined the coaching staff at Gloucester as an advisor to Head Coach Bryan Redpath and his coaching team, but moved to local rivals Bath Rugby to take up the post of performance director in June 2010.

The last government were convinced that we were there to do their bidding. They wasted vast quantities of our money in order to spy on us, intimidate us and needlessly over regulate us, whilst gold plating their own pensions and expenses. Their behind the scenes encouragement of, and turning a blind eye to, the kettling and harrassment tactics of the Police are a shameful episode in our history which we need to remember and address urgently. - Haloman

I wouldn't say that either Goldthorpe or Charles were more worthy. They were both greats in their own sports and had strong Leeds connections. That Charles got the nod has more to do with United being about a hundred times more popular than Hunslet than merit.
Sanderson was a good athlete but not a great one. I can't see why much would be named after her.

played abroad
popular abroad.
fine player: I saw him play,he was terrific.
albert Goldthorpe
clean playing record
loyal to one club for many years a club in the very area where the centre is situated
played against the first Kangaroos
came from the area
captained one of the greatest club sides in the history of the game he played.

However, Charles’ fame far exceeds Goldthorpe’s and I can understand why LCC may wish to name the facility after somebody who’s better known around the country and even around the world- part of their role is to put the city on the map.

I guess different people define 'suitably recognised' differently.
