what did he do to deserve having a major sporting facility named after him when other people were far more deserving? Albert Goldthorpe, Tessa Sanderson to name butv two

If you need to know what he did pop over to wikipedia.

I never understood why he was never properly honoured.

A lot of Yorkshiremen believe that when God created the world, he made it with perfect balance.
He balanced the hot areas with the cold areas. the dry areas with the wet areas.
And, in creating Yorkshire, he created the most glorious place on earth - full of majestic beauty and sporting giants.........and for balance he created....... Lancashire.

well Albert came from the city ,but Tessa how long did she reside in Leeds?
there was a poll asking the citizens what kind of permanent tribute would they like for John Charles.
It was an overwhelming vote for a statue.
The people who voted for a statue were very disappointed when the council took the easy route and named the south leeds stadium after John Charles.
Yes the albert Godthorpe complex would have been better.
I wonder if they have got round to putting up a plaque in tribute to the hunslet 4 cups team yet?

Theres a plaque in tribute to Albert outside the main entrance to the stadium. I personally would have named the stadium in honour of Geoff Gunney MBE. Leeds born and bred, born in Armley then brought up in Hunslet. Played all his career for Hunslet for over 25 years. Was picked to tour Australia and New Zealand at the age of 20. When the old Parkside ground was sold and the great Hunslet team died Geoff was the man who (with his own money) resurrected the club and formed New Hunslet who are now Hunslet Hawks and play at the stadium.

Leeds United is not garish. It's dour, grim and prone to random violence.

That'll be Valley Parade then, or as it's known to both, the Guaranteed Three Points Stadium.

No one likes us, WE DON'T CARE!!!! - CCAFC cheers gingerjon.

What dissappoints me most is that here in Wales John has never been really properly recognised for his great achievements. I think if he had come to Cardiff City earlier in his career he may have got more recognition, however his achievements with the National Team are still spoken to this day as the Golden Era of Welsh Football.Even in his home city of Swansea I don't think there is a permanent statue or memorial to his great achievements.

Most days I walk through St. Davids Centre here and pass a statue to GARETH EDWARDS , widely recognised as the best player ever for Wales RU and the sport in general who achieved all of his honours whilst playing for Cardiff, not that you can compare the two but I think John Charles's achievements are of equal if not greater value than that of Edwards.

Also ,thankfully the wheels are now in motion for a statue to the Great FRED KEENOR ,its a disgrace how there has been nothing to commemorate his life as well as his sporting achievements , and he's the only one of these three men who was born in this city. If anyone deserves a statue it is this man!
