Am I the only one sick to death of the ubiquitous, pompous, self-aggrandising old git?
Astute analysis from a Wigan fan:

Rumour going around Headingley that Wire will have to play the second half with 12 men.

It seems that they forgot to bring the half time oranges, and Solomona ate Chris Bridge instead.

Don't know why he was hungry, as he looked as though he had eaten the whole youth team before the game started.

No, you're not the only person in the entire world to dislike stephen fry. Why anyone would dislike him so much or describe him in the words you did is a mystery to me though.

He can be mildly entertaining and by turns bloody irritating too. To me he's a poor man's Oscar Wilde!

To that extent, yes, probably.

That said it as not as controversial as Hindle XIII not liking Kylie.

Nowt controversial about that. Can't stand her. Alvin and the Chipmunks music for the 21st century. About as sexy as Eric Pickles in a sweaty thong.

He's alright. He wrote a very good book about poetry, which is definitely worth reading.

Twenty years ago I thought he was fantastic.

Ten years ago I still thought he was fantastic.

Now, I just can't abide anything with him in - including QI which I did used to really enjoy. It isn't *just* the ubiquity, it's the fact that he's become beyond a parody of himself. And it's a waste of talent, which is always annoying.

For mine - he's not nearly ubiquitous enough, is anything but pompous, and I fail to see how he is self-aggrandising at all. Indeed I would say that Stephen Fry is unduly modest, has a generosity of spirit rare in a 'celebrity;, and is one of only a few people on TV who stop the whole thing slipping into a mire of meaningless, mind-numbing, patronising, cynical drivel (see thread on ITV).

There is some irony in that Stephen Fry spent a fair proportion of his adult life preventing anything going up his backside in his role as gay celibate, and now seems to have disappeared up it himself.

Agreed, the man is clearly not of sound mind.

The last government were convinced that we were there to do their bidding. They wasted vast quantities of our money in order to spy on us, intimidate us and needlessly over regulate us, whilst gold plating their own pensions and expenses. Their behind the scenes encouragement of, and turning a blind eye to, the kettling and harrassment tactics of the Police are a shameful episode in our history which we need to remember and address urgently.

I like him.

The documentary he made on bipolar disorder, which he himself suffers from, was groundbreaking. It revealed a lot about the illness, how it disfigures the lives of those who suffer from it and affects the people around them too, and how he deals with it himself.

Some of the mean-spirited comments in this thread are unjustified, IMO, but thats' the internet for ya.

The man is famous and celebrated for his intelligence, erudition and self-effacing personality rather than the usual celebrity idiots famous for being unable to summon up even the smallest talent beyond getting their #### out, singing out of tune, marrying an overpaid untalented soccer prima donna, etc. What an odious man he is! Should be a crime.

He may have become famous for that but these days he really is just a celebrity like the rest. He's become a go-to guy whenever the BBC decides that TV needs a public school voice to make things seem clever. Which, as I said, is a shame.

And I really don't ever need to hear the 'stopped to pick a buttercup' line again.

I don't recognise what you say, but assuming it is true, do you suggest that Stephen tells the BBC to sod off, changes his voice or stops being clever? I for one would be glad if the media was full of properly spoken, clever people.

And by the way it's "stooped" not "stopped".

Just stick to the X Factor Jon and if you want a really good laugh have a look at the Lib Dem manifesto 2010.

What a strange attitude. No regional voices, no colloqualisms and nobody allowed on unless they can decline their Latin verbs.

I had no idea you were so deferential.

What a strange interpretation of "properly spoken".
