Of the top 50 shows, 39 are rugby league. Of the top 100, 73 are from the NRL. Next best is cricket with 11 games in the top 100, split between Twenty20 and one-day cricket. Only nine AFL games make the cut, although the sport has a greater presence on free-to-air television than the NRL.

With any other sport, you would expect a massively improved TV deal. With Rugby League...

"Perhaps it would be better that future criticism of sports be made on the narrow basis of what is being discussed, without reference to other sports, unless those sports offer a solution to the problem in hand." - Brian 'Pigface' Moore

"What happens in rugby union? A player takes the ball, moves forward a little and gets tackled. A whole load of players then roll about on the ground. Pheep! The referee gives a penalty." - Simon Barnes

I know, I know ...

On the other hand this article paints such a positive picture that even even if the game was run by a group of monkeys the cost of RL to the media should climb enormously on the back of such figures.

Hold on though ...

from what I have been reading the NRL are expecting to hit a home run with the next tv deal. Union is dying a slow death in Australia.

At present AFL has more games on free to air TV than NRL - that's something that needs looking at. Maybe one of the Saturday games should be available for free to air. The NRL might also be better served not going with just one fee to air channel. It's looking hopeful that Channels 7 and 10 might be interested this time. If nothing else a bit of competition might up Channel 9's game.

The NRL also needs to make sure that Melbourne Storm games are shown as live in Victoria - not some time after midnight. I'm fairly sure the Swans AFL matches are all shown live in Sydney - it's part of the contract. The NRL has a great product that TV companies want - they need to start using their strong barganing power to get a better deal for RL fans.

Interesting stuff, with some different takes on revenue figures.
No easy answer to the $1billion question

A senior TV executive recently told NRL boss David Gallop of the AFL's expectation of its next broadcasting contract: ''No one at the AFL wants to accept the fact that they got hit on the **** by a rainbow with their last contract.''

The NRL needs to get an additional 2 teams up and running by 2013,to offer an additional slot for Pay Tv.Then and only then can they stake a claim for $1b big ones for 5 years.
This time it is rugby league's turn to get a rainbow to hit its backside.
Las time the AFL got $780m over 5 years ,and the spin doctoring coming out of their head office had to be seen and heard to be believed.
Rugby league :If it was art, it would be a Monet.

The NRL has one thing that that the TV companies really want; State of Origin. What can the AFL offer in comparison?

The AFL deal, no doubt made Gallop and Co. how low they values the last TV rights deal.
