cracking signing and if the rumours are true there are 2 more cracking signings to come yet i suppose jamie thackeray is a bit of a risky one but as long as a good strong coach is onboard i dont see their being any problems also bound to help with a few old heads in the team as well.well done all involved in getting these sort of players on board.

Not convinced on this one.
Most of you will no I'm no protagonist and I try to remain objective.
I always found him to be a lazy lard @_rse with a propensity to be more of a 'wrong un' - not the best for the morale of the team!!

Time will tell if a change of environment will affect his persona - but at 31 I'm not confident.

I appreciate he's now a Raider and that you will all give him the plaudits of "great signing" etc - and why wouldn't you!! From outside looking in, it doesn't look that great to me folks!

Perhaps I'm wrong. It'll not take too long to find out - only 6 weeks to boxing day.

“I have been talking to him for a while and he can’t wait to get going – he will be scattering a few,” said Johnston, who is currently waiting to announce a second signing as well.

From the Evening Mail.

Great signing for a Championship club.

I disagree, its another Championship club signing a SL player who has had his day.

I personally was never critical of Catic's signing, he has always been a professional and his only disciplinary issues were on the pitch while still being a strong and even difficult character off the pitch. Thackeray is a different personality all together, he is nowhere near Catic in ability or professionalism.

As for "it must be ok because Des's mate Brian recommended him", I would suggest that recommendation came with a caveat along the lines of "good player if you can control him", can anyone image Des admitting he wouldn't be up to controlling him.

As I said, we will have to wait and see. I hope I am wrong and he fulfills his potential while at the club.

Our pack will be awesome this year, we never saw Matt James last year. If he can get and stay fit he is a fantastic player as well, as is Richard Fletcher.

I'm with you on this mate can't wait untill you play FAX with there forwards.

Light the blue touch paper and stands well back comes to mind!!

How can a player of his potential and experience be a bad signing? Ok, he has had injury troubles and hasnt been as prolific in the Super league in recent years compared to his earlier years, but he is GB international for god sake; he must have some excellent aspects to his game for him to be selected for international duties. I'm content to remain optimistic regarding Thackray, he is a fantastic addition to our pack and providing he remains fit and on track, he will be a force to be reckoned with next year.

I think people are failng to see what Daz is saying, he isn't saying he's a bad player, it's his reputation off the field like Bell from two years ago when he played he was class hard running centre but it was the baggage he come with.

Are people seriously comparing Thackray to Bell ???
Thackray has played 200 games in SL and has 3 GB caps. Bell played 1 game in SL.

Bell is currently spending time at Her Majesty's Pleasure - and not for the first time.

People have been bemoaning our lack of signings - but when the first one is named it's all doom and gloom.

SRC, nobody is comparing his rugby ability to anyone. Infact no body questioning his ability at all. Some people don't like the stigma he carries (not me) and they are entitled to there opinion.

I personally think he will be a great addition to the side, but we don't all have to agree. If O.N.S is proved wrong I'm sure he will be the first to admit it.

That's fair enough Jamie, but I just hope that he's given time and isn't panned every time he makes a mistake or has an average game. If you remember, Zeb and Ned both took time to hit real form and look at them now.

He played for South Wales Scorpions at Workington last season and he made a couple of hit ups and looked good for Championship 1 level but after a couple of bone shuddering tackles and losing the ball both times he spent more time out the back than up at the sharp end.
I remember when .............................

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

its nothing to do with what happens on the pitch,i think supporters are more concerned about his exploits off the pitch.there is no doubting he is a very good player when he is on his game its keeping him on his game, but like its already been said lets see how he goes

I agree Phil. Every time any player is signed he is slagged by some supporters before he's touched the ball. Let's give him a chance. The BOD have made very few mistakes on player selection so far.

dont here many people slagging offf a certain barrow winger when he was up not so long ago? reason why
he done the talking on the pitch. get off your whinging backsides and praise our board and the player for 1st wanting to come to barrow, i bet there was a few other clubs in for him and we came top of his list and 2nd this type of player shows our ambition and will make other players attracted to join the ranks here.

I have watched him plenty, and he always seemed to be anything but a lazy lard @_rse... as you see fit to call him, he's anything but imo,.. he always appeared to have plenty of commitment on the field of play.......a strong running prop with a good work ethic... who gave S/L defenses plenty to think about, and not bad in defense as far as I remember. I can't comment about his off field exploits because I don't do hearsay, but if Nobby saw fit to sign, and then recommend him to Raiders that will do for me.

yes, time alone will tell whether he will do the biz for us, until then I will refrain from pre-judging as to what benefits he will or will not bring to our club, except to say, he is after all, a S/L player and as such should be given a chance to prove his worth in our colors.

maybe he will even bring his mentor with him that really would be something rolleyes.gif
