Costa, how on earth would a referee be any better if he got paid more? In an ideal world a referee would give what he sees, ( or what his touchjudge advises him ) no matter how much he's on.

You and once a ref have completely missed the point I was making.

I said that if referees fees were increased, more people would take up the whistle. It is reasonable to conclude that a larger pool of officials would bring with it higher standards of refereeing.

if ya paid refs more they'd only spend more on the pi$$, resulting in even worse perfomances.

rubbish. if a ref is bad then he is just bad! how is paying him more or bringing more referee's in going to help that particular bad ref? maybe paying more money it will attract more people trying there hand at refereeing and then by chance some people who go for it might actually be good at it but still i just dont see how that can improve the standards of the current referee's? Iv seen some shocking referee's this year and it really is fustrating that the standards seem to be dropping each year. If paying them more would improve their standards then they shouldnt be refereeing at all because their obviously not reffing to the best of ability on the current financial pay. Either that or there just bad refs!! simple as that!

Again, the point I was making has been completely overlooked.

You quite rightly say that higher referees fess would attract more people to officialdom. I also agree with you that some of these new recruits would prove themselves to be talented referees. My point is that when the amateur game is in a position where they have a large number of referees (perhaps even too many), we would no longer have to put up with poor referees.

I think its safe to say that Costa's views do not reflect that of all referees.

IMO (as a referee) if you are refereeing form money they you are refereeing for all the wrong reasons.

I referee for the enjoyment of the game and because injury does not allow me to play. I referee because its a way of putting something back into the game. I dont charge for junior games and instead donate the money back to a club fund.

A lot of the older TJs are out refereeing on Saturdays in the regional leagues, which I think they would prefer to do.
