Workington player James Finch has been given a five-month suspension by the UK Anti-Doping authority after testing positive for the banned substance ephedrine.

The 27-year-old centre or winger, who moved from Barrow to Workington 12 months ago to play alongside younger brother Liam, claimed to have taken the Chinese herb MaHuang, which is a natural source of the stimulant ephedrine.

Finch's ban started on September 5 and will end on February 5, 2011.

Strange that because the dates are virtually the whole of the close season.

Very strange mike seen as this IS a perfromence enhancing drug, yet people who take recreational drugs have been getting two years.

Is it because he is saying it was Chinese herb MaHuang and they can't prove it was a man made substance??

I would be surprised if that come into it, it was tested positive so the substance was there.

JF was not actually playing at the time, he was on sabatical while he was away working, he had not been included in the team for a few weeks leading up to this game, and it was not his intention to return any time soon.

As i understand it from a very reliable source, he was taking diaretics to help shed some weight while he was training down South! He was then asked to turn out last min by Town and unfortunately was tested while the drugs were still in his system, i believe they hang around for a few days!

This as i understand it, was proven and as a result the ban was lowered to relect that! the trace was not large enough to show he had taken them prior to the game, but nevertheless he should not have had them and refused to play, hence the ban!

Was the substance banned???? Yes should he of been taking it while a contracted player??? No

To me there is no case to argue, if so then there is a case for recreational drugs. There banned for a reason, if in doubt don't take em.
