He was talking about the stewards last season and at one point was going to appoint his own until he found out that they all had to be trained to a certain standard and he couldn't just pluck a dozen volunteers from the crowd. The local authority also has some say on who can or cannot be a steward if I am correct.
As for bar takings and catering takings that has nothing whatsoever to do with Denham and neither mean he makes a loss. When he holds the presentation night in a local hotel does he get the takings from behind the bar of get the cost of the food handed to him for his pocket?

While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

I get the impression Mr Denham is looking for a way out and is looking for a scapegoat, Comets fold and Town become the bad guys.

Just make it public what reduction he is asking and what Town would accept
Then everybody can see who is being reasonable

I agree Red108. I know in the past Dave Bowden hasn't gone down the road of discussing these affairs in public but Denham seems to do nothing else but run to the press, so let's fight fire with fire if that is his preferred way of doing business. Town end up every time getting a bad name and the knock on effect of that with the likes of match sponsors, etc, can be detrimental to the club.

Denham was on Radio Cumbria this morning.
He stated the now expired lease he picked up when he took over the Comets was £1600 p.w. that included £400 for stewards.
He stated DB has reduced that lease to £1300 and that still included £400 for the stewards.
The amount of Stewards is dictated by Cumbria County Council and Town and the standards and laws for safety, he stated if there was no reduction in this cost there would be no Comets.
RC attempted to get comment from Town but no-one was available for comment.
Whatever happened to his ex-manager "taking Town for every penny they have got" when he 'fell' as he stated at the end of season presentations.
Funny never heard any more on this

Mr Denham must be very slow on the uptake concerning this matter as his rent does not include stewards, that is separate issue over which Town have no control. So, his rent last season was, or should have been, £1200 and if what he said is correct then that has been reduced to £800 per meeting for 2011.
The county council safety committee decide how many stewards they have to have and each steward is about £10 per hour, so if they have to have 10 stewards per meeting for 4 hours each then that is the £400 he is talking about. Town don't get that money, the stewards get it, so what is he wanting, Town to pay for his stewards!!!! Now which part of that does he not understand?????

When i was stewarding most of the lads were volunteers,i knew only a handful that was being paid.In the post by keith he said they get paid £10 per hour, well they only got paid £10 for the whole night if they got paid £10 per hour keith they would be very happy,at this moment i do not know what the lads are on but it will be not much above and i am guessing about £15 pound if they are lucky.Denham actually tried to set up his own stewards but was told in no certain manner if you do not use the town stewards there will be no speedway at derwent park, infact on this particular night he told the boss of the stewards(howard) that he only needed four and that was all he needed to run speedway but we all decided to walk out in which no speedway could go on and he soon changed his mind, anyway,he is the most obnoxious person you could ever wish to meet,he has lost a lot of real good speedway supporters and people who done really important jobs like machine inspectors and fuel men because of his nasty bloody temper and i am suprised that nobody has rolled him over, but hey,the nasty people like him will never succeed when you deal with genuine people like he doe's,but i have got to say that personally i do like to go to speedway meetings along with my brothers, but it's a while since i last went down and maybe it was mr denham himself that stopped me going through his attitude to the loyal spectators who have now stopped going to the speedway.I hope that the speedway doe's keep going and that denham leaves then you will see the loyal fans making their way back to the ground.

hi keith,i do not know the actual amount of stewards that are currently employed at DP at the moment, but i would guess it is only around 15.A lot of the stewards do rugby and some prefer to do speedway so they vary has to the venue they attend,i think denham is looking for the easy way out and the favourite target is the landlord and that is workington town,i think that no matter what figure the club comes up with it will not be enough for denham, quite simply he wants out and we are his scapegoat and then we get the furore from the speedway fans that we are to blame,he simply is a nasty fella that a lot of people really do not like.In the mean time i hope that another person takes over the running of the speedway and gets denham out for the good of both sides and that our club comes to some amicable agreement with the new promotors and we can all get on with watching both sports if that is your choice.

When I was treasurer for the Town Accademy I HAD to pay Howard £80 for 8 stewards on match days. We were getting gates of around 70 /80 supporters many of whom were pensioners and children?? Arnie

Hi arnie,i am suprised there was eight stewards down for the academy games but with you being the treasurer you would know.I would have been one of them but i am proud to say i never got paid,i was happy that the money i was supposed to have been paid went back to the club and it was the same at speedway i never took any money, but now i wish i had done.
