Eccles 18 Mayfield 20. Considering Eccles' injury problems this was a better result than I expected. Mayfield looked like they would run up a cricket score, going 18-0 up in 22 minutes, and 24-6 at half time. Eccles actually had the better of the second half I thought. The more important issue is what use are touch judges in Rugby League. I don't just mean at amateur level, but all levels. Not one of them can spot a forward pass, or are they being intructed to ignore them if its only a little bit forward? The two we had tonight should give it up!

I went to watch this one with a Mayfield supporter and commented at the start that the touchies were the oldest I'd seen this year. They missed all sorts inc. loads of forward passes, dropping with the elbow and a blind side haymaker to a player on the ground. I think that the players deserved better than officiating they received and at least a ref who knows what ten yards looks like.
That said, Eccles didn't fold when they looked to be out of it at 24-0 and dug deep to get back which made for a good game on a nasty night. Eccles forwards never gave up and neither did the crowd shouting "forward" more in passing than hope, half of the floodlights did though as the lights went out on a brave Eccles fight back. Another five injuries to add to our ever-increasing list! One detained in hospital with badly broken arm and awaiting an operation. Two have been this morning, one with a dislocated shoulder, and one with a knee problem.

The other two - who lasted little more than 5 minutes - may yet have to follow them.

It was, indeed, a black night for Eccles - especially in the Clubhouse after the match, when a main board fuse plunged the club into darkness (except for the changing rooms!). So no beer or food for the good people of our game after the match!

The touch judges, however, still had the wherewithall to find me in the darkness after the match to claim their fees though! Perhaps if they had of been as young as they usually are, they would have been too frightened to have come into a darkened club room and we could have saved ourselves £25!

Just heard that another player spent the night in hospital with bad concussion. That was actually caused by a bad tackle that the official didn't challenge.

Other than that, everything's good......it could be even better if we had another General Election, but we won't go there, ay?

I dread to think what sort of team we are going to take to Millom next week Al. It will be a major achievement if we get a second team out!
