The constant niggling between the Chairman and the Director of Cricket has resulted in a show of power by the Board. Matthew Maynard has been humiliated and been honour-bound to walk out. Neither side has emerged with any credit.

It's hard for me to feel a great deal of instinctive sympathy for Maynard as I think that, years ago when he was captain, he treated Colin Metson unfairly. Now, Metson is his replacement.

The unfortunate casuaties are Mark Cosgrove and (presumably) Tom Maynard ... both likely to be big successes at other counties.

The 2011 season will probably end up in failure (again) unless they appoint Robert Croft as the new first-team coach and try to get Simon Jones back to rally the troops.
