Can't agree there terry mate. The one thing the current squad needs most is coaching....full stop. As for the appointments......I'm sitting on the fence on this one. I have reservations floating around in my head but they could also turn out to be exactly the type of coaches this squad of players need. The proof will be in the pudding as they say so lets see how they go.

While i agree the current squad needs the highest level of coaching available, I feel the first and utmost priority has to be fitness....ie, the ability to compete for the full period of the game..and beyond if required to do so.
Their aim...to be the fittest team in the division, is paramount IMO, this immediately gives them an edge over the others...not only that... but physical fitness, promotes mental ability, mental agility and a feel good factor.......again IMO, once these are in place, the response to coaching will be easier to achieve.

Apart from your first sentence Holty...my sentiments are much the same as yours, I too have reservations about the appointment of these two... particularly GS, which I shouldn't think will be far removed from your own.

As you so rightly say, the proof will be in the pudding, so lets see how they go.

Do me a favour about Des stepping in to the background I suppose you believe in fairies as well mate.

Des does what Des wants and if anyone doesn't like it they're out the door.

He's a one man ego trip.

Where has "schoey" been for the last 10 years? We need a proper coach not a media "face".

A proper coach would kick the backsides of the lazy players who didn't do the business last year but took the money right enough.

Schofield will bring us nothing and will be gone again probably even before the season begins.

His ego... as you call it has lifted this club out of the doldrums, dispute this if you can!!!!!

there are plenty of posters on here following the club for nearly 50 years and good on them if they got the chance to see a barrow side knocking over teams for the fun of it but that wont bring in the fans with a history lesson about the greats of the past. like him or not des has brought good times back to barrow.no more tax man banging on the door. no more debters asking for owed cash and gates well up on the numbers of 10 years ago. the rest of the championships ears prick up when we make signings and it feels good to make these signings that only a few years ago we would only dream about.if hes got a big ego, so what.life would be boring without these characters

Good luck to the new coaches and any new players joining the team. You will be, of course, judged by how well the team performs next season. I won't be judging you until then.... How could anybody ?

Good luck to the new coaches. I can't wait for the new season to start. Cant understand the negative posts abous DES. I no he seems to get involved a lot and some supporters don't seem to like that. But who else would bank roll the club like DES has in recent years. I would rather have des than some of the past chairmans who just seem to take take and take some more from the club

I find this a very strange appointment.

Schofield has spent the last 15 years as a journalist campaigning against RL being played outside the M62 corridor.

No real coaching experience and (to be kind), a mixed reputation amongst the RL fraternity.

I follow Batley. When Karl Harrison took over, he said the 'systems' we had in place were miles away from being able to compete in the Championship. This goes over my head, but I can see with my own eyes our massive improvement on the field in every facet of play since his arrival.

My fear is that Schofield will be miles off the pace of modern coaching and make a fool of himself. He seems like a good League fella and I wish him no illl will. He may be an inspirational leader, and Nigel Wright might be a brilliant coach.

Cumbria deserves a SL side, yet these appointments are massive gamble Considering the Raiders resources, is it one worth taking?

Correct me if I'm wrong but did he not coach the GB u19's squad who were undefeated in South Africa?

I'm confident he will bring the club forward and with Wright by his side it makes for an interesting combination... Roll on 2011.... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

South Africa isn't exactly a hot bed of rugby league is it???
I'm alittle unsure about this appointment, but des has never let us down yet so I will reserve judgement till the season starts and we have seen afew games.
I think the fact that Nigel Wright is coaching is excellent, always liked him.Would be nice to see afew local coaches being asked to go down and help out aswell.

Weren't Paul Creary and Dave Clark thought to be massive gambles with no coaching experience???, only time will tell whether the two newbies are worth it or not, somewhere along the line someone will be proven right or someone proven wrong, lets just keep an open mind and wait and see.

He probably does still think it but I doubt he will be saying it much in the press any more. I'm not having a go here as it would obviously be detremental to his new employer if he said another company should get a contract instead of his.

I think history has proved that Widnes would have been a far better option than Crusaders in Super League. Having said that, I would hope that he doesn't bang the drum for Widnes now he's the Barrow coach !!

Yea because i do not believe that they had 30 people apply for the job. If they had that many apply then it wouldn't of taken so lon gto make an appointment. The game has changed so much we need to be up in modern times if we want to compete at the highest level.

Do you want to try that again in English as opposed to Double Dutch!

As far as naming the others who applied for the job that would be a serious breach of trust and protocol.

How would you like it if you unsuccessfully applied for a job & the company then posted it on a website along with the names of all the other unsuccessful candidates.

I sometimes wish some people on here would show a modicum of common sense!
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

People seem to be overlooking the joint appointment of Nigel Wright. He has vast experience, both in the UK and Oz, of modern coaching and fitness techniques.

The players will be fit and will have the benefit of a coaching team brimming with playing experience and coaching skills. Plus, we now have a high profile coach who will champion Barrow at every opportunity in the media.

Add to this that one or both of them will be in town 5 days a week and, on paper, we now have a very good set-up.

Were Halifax fans moaning about Matt Calland when he was appointed head coach, he was only assistant coach at Fax before this with no coaching experience. Lets let them get on with the job and be thankfull for everything we now have at CravenPark because it wasn't that long ago when we were totally in the wilderness.
