The RFL have confirmed today that a thorough consultation period is to commence as the sport seeks input into shaping a new strategy for the Championships from 2012 onwards.

All major stakeholders, including supporters, will have the opportunity to submit their views up to mid-December, and the RFL are urging fans of the sport to complete a short questionnaire on the RFL website. go to, http://www.therfl.co...pporters_survey to view questionnaire

The aim of the review, first announced to clubs in June, is to ‘create the best, viable and competitive semi professional competition possible’ and the RFL are keen on ensuring the clubs have strong management and their levels of investment reflect the level of return to the sport.

Commenting on the consultation process, RFL’s Chief Operating Officer Ralph Rimmer, said:

“At this point we are seeking the views of all the game’s stakeholders including fans, sponsors, players and the media to ensure we are taking into account the informed opinions of these people when constructing a draft model outlining the future structure of the sport underneath Super League. The proposed structure will be taken to the clubs for an intense period of consultation before getting it signed off by the end of March 2011.”

The RFL has also entered into a partnership with the Rugby League Players Association (RLPA) to gather the views of players and coaches registered to the union.

“We are delighted that the RLPA, which has over 700 Rugby League professional coaches and players in their union, has entered into a partnership with the RFL to become the driving force in getting its members to input into the process," added Rimmer.

“Whilst the existing clubs will be integral to this, another key aspect of review is that the fans have the opportunity to shape the future and whilst it will be impossible to please everyone, we wish to involve as many people as possible to ensure the new strategy has everyone moving forward from 2012 onwards.”

Mark, the above link doesn't seem to work.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

So the RFL is conducting a review of the Championship competitions and the community game independant of the SL competition. This must be the clearest indicator to date that the current RFL administration is unfit to govern the sport.

This statement, inadvertently or not, confirms the fact that British Rugby League is not a unified sport, that the SL competition is not part of a single hierachical structure and that the sports own governing body accepts if not endorses that split.

I would suggest that any review of the sport needs to consider all levels of the game, its funding, support and governance with a single suite of operational rules and processes, a robust organisational and financial support structure and a single vision of developing and promoting the game of Rugby League at all levels.

I would suggest that this is nothing more than an exercise in deceit, paying lip service to our leagues in an attempt to mollify the increasing numbers of disaffected fans while offering nothing but hollow promises and fools gold. The RFL are like con artists, Lewis keeps you distracted while Wood picks your pocket.

Easy to fill in - Championship & Div 1 excellent. Only improvements - fairer share of Sky Money and Promotion / Relegation from Sky SL Circus

3 x 14 team leagues (promoting some ambitious Conference teams to champs 1)

2up/2 down with minimum transparent standards

Northern Rail cup group stages abolished with a knock out from the start

New teams to start in Championship One

Equal rules for all divisions, eg overseas players, no special dispensations for any team

Salary cap abolished except that teams can only spend a % on players wages, let the ambitious and strong prosper and not be dragged down to a lower level. Loans from directors that have to be repaid not to be counted as income.

Fairer distribution of TV money so the leap between divisions isn't so great with the proviso that Academies must be run by all clubs

Surely repayable loans will not be treated as income, Steve, because they will be shown as repayable directors loans on the Balance Sheet and not as Trading Account income.
