To be fair, the Irish have been particularly screwed over by their government.
For one thing, they joined the Euro which meant they lost control of their interest rates thus fueling a property and investment boom; it also hampers their efforts to make repayments (can't devalue).
Worst of all the Irish government didn't just save the savings / currents accounts of the average Joe Soap but actually nationalised bank bonds.
Hence their debts are about three times more serious than ours.
