So who do you think should win - plenty always knock the show but I always end up watching some if not all of it
10 Nominees

Personally I'd like to see Phil Taylor get something

The list again shows the paucity of British sporting talent.

Haye and Taylor are head and shoulders ahead of most of the rest; Cavendish, McDowell, Daley and Williams have done it on a world stage. The rest are fillers.

Cavendish for mine. Didn't get the Tour de France green jersey, so fits the heroic British failure bill. But has won the most stages there of any Brit. And had the Green in Spain.

Best of all, he has a personality! Temper, speaks his mind, bursts into tears and shows emotion on winning. He won't win it, but he should.

  • Mark Cavendish (cycling) - fellow cyclist Chris Hoy won it quite recently, which shouldn't mean anything, but often does. Also, the wider public (non-cycling fans) won't be impressed by 'mere' stage wins, as they don't understand the significance within the sport.
  • Tom Daley (diving) - possible winner in 2012, if he shines at the Olympics, but not this year. Not enough people rate succes at the Commonwealth Games high enough.
  • Jessica Ennis (heptathlon) - see Tom Daley.
  • David Haye (boxing) - heavyweight boxing is a bankrupt concept these days, and pushing over Audley Harrison hasn't really impressed the nation. Plus, plenty of people see boxing as barbaric, so that's a whole chunk of votes that he'll never see, however well his career goes.
  • Tony McCoy (horse racing) - a likely winner, simply because he's achieved a lot and not won it before. Also because of somewhat underwhelming competition from other nominations.
  • Graeme McDowell (golf) - split votes for golfists between him and Westwood. Ian Woosnam will, no doubt, blame it all on a 'fix'. tongue.gif
  • Graeme Swann (cricket) - the jury will be out 'til the Ashes are over. Which is after the SPOTYs for this year, at least.
  • Phil Taylor (darts) - a colossus of his sport and should have won it at least once already. Snobbery and ill-informed opinions about darts will ensure that he won't win this year, next year, or ever.
  • Lee Westwood (golf) - see Graeme McDowell.
  • Amy Williams (skeleton bob) - great (and historic) success, but it was so early in the year, many will have forgotten her achievement.

Darts should not be classed as a sport IMO.

Ennis would be my choice. wub.gif

Personally, I'd like to see Ryan Giggs win it again.

Then get rid of the ridiculous waste of time and licence fee money that the event is.
On 13/2/2013, Hull City's owners the Allams, released a statement in their position as the owners of the KC Stadium Management Committee. One line in this statement read as follows....

"The SMC's principal responsibility is to remain neutral"

Should be Taylor

But id have no probs with Cav or McCoy winning it

A lot of Yorkshiremen believe that when God created the world, he made it with perfect balance.
He balanced the hot areas with the cold areas. the dry areas with the wet areas.
And, in creating Yorkshire, he created the most glorious place on earth - full of majestic beauty and sporting giants.........and for balance he created....... Lancashire.

Taylor to win

How do we vote in this thing, anyway?

Phone or internet. The full list of awards are:
• Team of the Year
• Coach of the Year
• Overseas Personality
• Young Personality
• Helen Rollason Award
• Unsung Hero Award
• Lifetime Achievement
• Sports Personality of the Year
Only the last is put to a public vote IIRC, which allows the BBC to ensure Rugby Union usually gets something on the night. wink.gif

Phil Taylor deserves some kind of lifetime achievment award but for this year it shoud be Cavendish.

My hunch for the winner, and the one I expect the BBC will give the 'hard sell' is Tony McCoy.

Why isn't the Team of the Year put to a public vote?

It was one year but there were sinister voting patterns and the wrong winner won.

And the "right" team didn't even make the top three in the public vote. Trouble is, the BBC had been pushing their claim very hard and the whole atmosphere of the event was so pro the "right" team that they were practically walking up to the stage to take the trophy before the announcement. laugh.gif

Clearly, things had to be changed so the BBC could ensure that, in future, the British public got the winner that they obviously really intended to vote for all along.

I loved the BBC's statements that the "sinister" comment was off the record, so we weren't allowed to mention it!

Never heard of many on that list! Cavendish won some stages but he is not a Champion of his sport. Darts is not a Sport really but Taylor should win it if his name is there as he has been so consistantly dominant. Sadly for him his sport and face do not fit in with the BBC as only Soccer, Cricket, Union, Olympics, Horse Sports and Motor Sports exist to the BBC.

These golfers tend to be rather bad losers when it comes to the SPOTY awards, don't they? laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Absolutely. That poulter guy has made an utter ahrse of himself . Don't see what the problem is personally - taylor stands in one spot, throwing bits of metal. When Geoff Capes did the same, he ended up with the Queens Jubilee Medal.
