Good.
Thought you would of liked all the building, investment in infrastructure and job creation...
With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

My sympathies to Russia.

The last government were convinced that we were there to do their bidding. They wasted vast quantities of our money in order to spy on us, intimidate us and needlessly over regulate us, whilst gold plating their own pensions and expenses. Their behind the scenes encouragement of, and turning a blind eye to, the kettling and harrassment tactics of the Police are a shameful episode in our history which we need to remember and address urgently. - Haloman

Can't understand those who think that missing out on hosting the World Cup is a good thing.

Well done to Russia, I think they will make a good show of it all. They have never hosted it previously whereas we have. Maybe the fact that we are actually rubbish at the game too might have been a factor in the decision.
All that grovelling by Beckham and the sponger counted for nowt in the end!
Oh and seeing as he was there too - can we blame Cameron and the Tories for not getting it?

I agree. Although there are lots of people don't like football there are sure as heck shed loads that do. I think the atmosphere would have been brilliant. The country gets swept away by it when it's abroad so it would have been incredible to host it. I think it's a crying shame.

I suspect people have concerns about the violence and trouble that so often accompanies major soccer tournaments and with a certain element of the UK fanbase being that way inclined the potential was defintely there for things to become quite unpleasant.

I can't imagine why Claire Balding described league fans as a "chippy lot".

Aye, Putin didn't even bother with the pretence. He clearly knew it was a done deal.

Maybe it's just me who's genuinely gutted.
The World Cup is more than just football, it is a chance for the whole nation to come together. It's a once in a lifetime thing although I'm not sure I'll ever see it in England in my lifetime. I honestly can't see when we'll get it if we got so low this time.
I've become less and less of a football fan over the last decade or so but the World Cup is still a unique event.

That's what I think. The Beeb this morning said he wasn't showing his face because he knew he'd lose. Shows how much the Beeb know. They also said that Spain and Portugal were the ones to beat on the second round. Apparently we only got two votes in the first round.

You really think the two are comparable?
Students smash a few windows shout a bit and generally make a nuisance of themselves (fire extinguisher aside)...soccer hooligans....well you've read the reports, stabbings, violent assault on one another, real country v country hatred.
I can live with a few angry students. I am in no way disappointed to not have a huge batch of soccer hooligans descend on the UK. No I am not suggesting all soccer fans are hooligans before that is raised.

they are comparable. absolutely. large groups roaming the streets a number of which hell bent on violence and intimidation. lets not put the fire extinguisher aside, nor the hooded plebs carrying iron bars. or does a home counties accent give you carte blanche to wreak havoc on the streets? 153 arrests the other day at a student protest, 152? leeds banning orders...i think banning student protests is entirely justified to stop these hooligans in their quest for violence.

How many people killed in student protests in the UK?

no idea. is this the benchmark? as long as no-one is killed then riot away? there was no-one killed at the vila-brum game last night, yet the papers are for some inane reason up in arms about it. what's the big deal, no-one died.

So no distinction between rioters that cause death and rioters that do not. Interesting take on it.
