I must admit to being a supporter of 28 days later.

You can't beat having a good look around old abandoned historic buildings like the New Victoria in Bradford etc.

Lots of interesting stuff on there. They have been on our site a few times (ex 8th Army Air Force base and UK test base).

Some of they exploring in sewers gives great pictures but I wonder at the mankyness!

it's the trainspotting of dereliction
threy seem to think gthje trukles about breaking and entering, trespass etc don't apply to them. When they publish their stuff on line it attracts vandals, druggies, fly tippers, doggers, thieves.

at the other side of the woods at the back of my housde are buildings that have had the 'urban explorers' treatment, with the resulting problems. The buildings are dangerous, and have issues with asbestos, and bird dropping borne diseases. One building is a haven for bats and the colony has been put aat risk by these egomaaniacs.

I think Chris makes good points. Trespassing is illegal and dangerous. If one of these people was injured whilst illegally entering a derelict site, who would be liable?

it doesn't matter where it happens, this is just an example I have experience of.
At the southern end of central Leeds was tyhe Yorkshire chemical works factory. The site is still toxic. These idiots were 'exploring' the partially demolished site whiled dismantling work was still in progress(out of work hours and at weekends). All fore the sake of pics of some rusty pipework and peeling paint. These sites do need recording, but not by these fools

On a serious note though it's a fair point about the danger and legality of it all. Reading some of the stories on there and on other webistes it seems that not only are they putting themselves in danger (that's their choice i suppose) but they are also endangering others such as security guard and demolition workers etc. I'm not convinced that it's because of these "explorers" that the vandals junkies and flytippers all turn up though.

these places are published on websites. Where I live wa scalled 'the secret abaondoned village', by these idiots. Bound to attract all sorts with a label like that.

I think 'recording' these places is aa red herring to justify what they do. For instance former neighbours of mine were given permission to store personal effects in one of the buildings. The storage room was broken into and ransacked, stuff stolen. There were family photographs strewn around the floor. The 'explorers' took photographs of these and ppublished them on the web. Desolation and decay as you light heartedly pointed out can be interesting and valid topics for photography. But breaking into buuildings aand taking the same pics of the same things, none of which are of historical interest is not making a historical record.
There have been several fires in the buildings, some of which have been demolioshed recently. The main building is a warren of corridors and small rooms. Lethal if anyone is caught in there when there is another act of arson.
It's alright saying 'well they put themselves at risk it's up to them': sometimes for the benefit of everyone idiots need protecting from themselves.
