Living in a different country to my bride it is currently costing a fortune in phone calls, texts and the like.
She is also about to start doing a job involving a good deal of travelling and wants something she can watch tv / videos / music.
I heard that the Ipod touch has a wifi thingy, you can watch iplayer from BBC and 4od stuff on it, and that we could use it as a phone via skype.
As you may tell, I have not a clue what i'm talking about. Are these things any good? Should I consider alternatives?
Any help gratefully received.

The Touch is OK for limited use. Decent for music, OK for video but the screen is just too small and it's not that great with certain video/music formats.
It does have WIFI but it chews the battery quite quickly compared to most other things it does.
You need an external mic to get it to work on Skype (edited for mistake)
If you want to go the Apple way, I'd consider the iPad as it's far more useful for watching video plus it does Skype fairly well.
Either way, Touch or iPad, if you get her one, get her a good set of headphones as the Apple ones are abysmally bad.

I'd've thought that the itouch is on the way to becoming obsolete with folk going for either an iphone or an ipad.
No?

Can't stick an ipad in your pocket and I have my Blackberry as my main phone.

A more tablet alternative:

The Touch is a fantastic music/video player and web browser, but after that, not a great deal else.
PS
I prefer Gizmo5 to Skype.
