It appears that Sepp Blatter has upset some people, again.
http://news.bbc.co.u...all/9284186.stm
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has joked that gay fans travelling to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar should "refrain from any sexual activities".
The Gay Football Supporter's Network said: "We strongly condemn Fifa's decision and will be leading a LGBT [Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender] boycott of all activities associated with World Cup 2022.
I imagine a boycott of this magnitude will have Mastercard, Coca-Cola and McDonalds withdrawing their sponsorship any minute now.

So, if you're a homosexual investigative journalist who likes a drink, you may want to cover an alternative sporting event that year.
If it's so easy to make Fanny Blatter say stuff like this, surely this is something that should be done on a more regular basis, just to undermine his position of power within the game, no?

A boycott is surely the wrong tactic.
Gay supporters should try to buy up as many tickets as possible and go to the World Cup in Qatar in big numbers, forcing the Qataris to confront the issue directly. They could hardly arrest 'em all!

Great idea.
This would make for a spectator sport far more interesting than the football.

FIFA is vehemently
Anti discrimination
Article 58 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code:
Anyone who publicly disparages, discriminates against or denigrates someone in a defamatory manner on account of race, colour, language, religion or ethnic origin, or perpetrates any other racist and/or contemptuous deed, will be subject to match suspension for at least five matches at every level. Furthermore, a stadium ban and a fine of at least CHF 20,000 will be imposed on the perpetrator. If the perpetrator is an official, the fine will be at least CHF 30,000.

Quite a dilemma for FIFA. How do they get around this one without offending anyone?

So are homosexuals disparaging, discriminating against, or denigrating the people and/or country of Qatar on account of religion?

Light hearted comments are generally fine but not really appropriate on subjects like this as those who like a bit of trolling will latch on to them and ruin what is a serious thread.
We're mightily fed up of people picking on others or being aggressive (passively or otherwise) towards others simply because they can. We're going to start swinging the ban hammer on these people to give ourselves an easier Christmas period.
Thread re-opened for genuine comments.

all sorts of people like soccer.
Qatar and all the other medieval brutal regimes of the middle east not only dislike all sorts of people but have laws prosecuting people for simply beig who they are
A large proprtion of the soccer loving world either wont be welcome, will be discriminated against or will be criminalised simply because of their gender or sexuality.
a pox on't

Don't know if Qatar has history with this one, but about a year ago a couple (male and female partner) made headlines by being arrested for holding hands in public while not married. (I think that was the gist of what happened and it made the BBC World News) It was somewhere in the Gulf States, just not sure exactly where.
Just how did they get the World Cup instead of, say, Australia?

Who is this 'large proportion' who won't be welcome?
Should a sport ever award its major events to countries which decree that homosexuality is illegal?

Sexuality isn't listed there which is concerning as it should given how hard a time gay sports players have had

1966 it was in a country where homosexuality was illegal
But yeah in this day and age that would probably be the right thing not to give them it

No.
That's most of Africa out of contention then, plus swathes of the Caribbean, Melanesia, Polynesia, central Asia, and of course, most of the Middle East.
In fact, if you wanted to hold a sporting competition in the Middle East, there is only one logical choice - Israel.
Effectively, you are barring most of the 'developing nations' from holding major sporting events.

Homosexuality is also legal in Turkey and possibly Kuwait, it was til recently in Iraq (I'll let people work out what changed there)
