If you say so, but that is a peripheral issue, what do you think about the issue he raises?
Should we oppose sporting contact with all regimes that are not free open democracies with a good record on civil rights?
Should we as RL supporters (and I'll take the liberty of including myself in that group) lobby the RLIF to cease all contact with Lebanon until they address the issues of Palestinian rights
Should we refuse any contact with Papua New Guinea until they legalise Homosexuality?
Should I as a RU supporter lobby the RFU not to play in the Hong Kong or Dubai Sevens?

All good points and the answer to all the above should be "no" as far as I am concerned.

That would quite legitimately debar England, which has treated the citizens of Diego Garcia absolutely disgracefully.

Why not lobby them to cease all contact with England until it addresses the issue of an illegal invasion of Iraq?

Should we refuse any contact with Papua New Guinea until they legalise Homosexuality?
I'd say the cannibalism was an equally pressing issue.

Yes, because they won't win anyway. biggrin.gif

Meanwhile, no such fears and problems with Russia, just race related football hooliganism and rioting. dry.gif

Heard that on the news last night. Wonder what would have happened had it been going on a week or so ago!

I think the £s would have still flowed and the decision would have still have been the same. dry.gif

The law of averages dictates that some gay footballers play at the highest level worldwide.

If ahead of the Qatar world cup i) the environment in soccer relaxes to the point where players can be openly gay and ii) one or more high profile players come out, it could get quite interesting.

Would they ban, say, the gay captain of the incumbent world champion at that time from competing?

Not untypically, Blatter has proven himself to be an insensitive idiot.

This is a misunderstanding. It is not illegal to be gay in Qatar. It is illegal to have sex with someone of the same gender. So there would be no more need to ban a gay player than to ban a player who liked shagging hookers (also illegal).

Not that I agree with it.

A lot of people think FIFA may have stuffed up with this decision, but, as this story demonstrates, it won't be that easy to spread the horizons of football without offending a few people.

http://www.dailymail...n-killings.html

More than two-thirds of UN members, many of them Muslim nations, are refusing to sign a separate statement condemning human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity, especially with regard to the application of the death penalty and extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions.
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.
