Labour needed to be in the centre ground, he added, although there was a case for the opposition being "to the right" of the coalition government on security and penal issues.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Kenneth Clarke is certainly dangerously liberal on crime issues, talking of releasing dangerous criminals etc. Many of the people in prison shouldn't be there but it doesn't mean they should be attacking people on the street, instead they should be in the lunatic asylums that have been shut down. Now I don't want to go back to the days of treating them as a 'loony bin' to throw anyone in but the public should also be protected from dangerous people who also need protecting from theirselves not being put in prison

For all his faults Ken Clarke seems to be looking at the right things with regards to rehabilitation. Locking up too many people on ineffective sentences in places where drug use is rife is not the way forward. Its scary when labour is more illiberal than the tories.

Getting people off drugs will have a greater impact on crime than locking them up. Rehabilitation is not a dangerous concept.

There ate too many people on short sentences for non-dangerous crimes that may be better off on community sentences perhaps. But when people are attacking pensioners or disabled people and getting away with community sentences (and it started under Labour) that is very dangerous.

exactly
there are other people in prison who shouldn't be as well-the mentally ill, the socially inadequate, whilst there are people who should be locked up who aren't. I'm not sure whether attacking pensioners and disabled people wont get you lopcked up though...if that isn't the case then it's a scandal.

Let's see what happens to the police officer that dragged that lad from his wheelchair last week.

I've read a few newspaper articles about it (one of the more recent was someone who attacked a terminally ill pensioner and merely got a suspended sentence and community service) but not sure what percentage of such incidences result in jail

As a nation we do seem very quick to judge the outcome of court cases as "madness" based on the tabloids we derise in so many other areas rather than actually having sat and consumed the evidence in its entirity ourselves.
