I heard a short time ago that Tommy died this morning. He was well known to a great many people in the Club and I thought it fitting to post a message on here.

Tommy would have been 96 in January and has had ill health for quite some time. He was a life long supporter of the Club and some years ago was time keeper. Until recently he rarely missed a game, home or away, and that included trips to South Wales, London Skolars and Toulouse.

I understand that in his younger days he was a useful rugby player and footballer.

I'm not sure but I think the funeral will be between Christmas and New Year.

This is indeed sad news, Michael. As you well know Tommy was not only a great follower of the club he also contributed enormously to the club financially in the club's times of need down the years and sought no publicity at all for this.
My sympathies to all Tommy's family and close friends.

Very sad news......and an absolute club slalwart and legend in my opinion. I've never met any supporter who had the devotion and commitment that Tommy had, a very generous and giving man who will surely be missed by many. RIP Tommy.

Des has sent me a text from Oz and asked me to 'convey his deepest sympathy to his family for a very fine man and gentleman and our oldest supporter'

I should have said on my previous post that on Wednesday I was leaving the hospital and met Martin Ostler, Jamie Rooney,Peter Durkin,Keith Holt and Willie 2 Hornes who had been to visit Tommy. How nice that he saw them before he died.

Tommy & I used to share many a story with each other. I enjoyed his company very much. A true follower of Barrow RLFC. Tis to be hoped that the club honour his loyalty (which I am ceratin they will!)
RIP Tommy

It tells a different story in today's rag. Said it was well attended by players and staff?

As far as I could see there were no current players at the funeral. In fairness, though, how many of the current squad would not know Tommy and also a number would either live outside the area or be working. I think it would have been nice to see current players as bearers.

I didn't say they were correct in what they were saying, did I? To be honest, half of what the mail prints is either stories from on here or the official website, yet they seem to think that constitutes journalism.

In the old days pre-web sites- it would have been fresh news.
However nowadays I send stuff to the web-site and Mail at the same time. Obviously it is going to appear on the official web-site first - or should I give the Mail a "scoop"
Believe it or not, not that many people browse the web-site and this forum compared to the Mail circulation and those that listen to Radio Cumbria.
This week:-
Gave the news that the cross code challenge was called off a top half of the back page.
Update on Zeb - main back page story.
At least three recent mentions of the items for sale in the shop.
Look at how many back pages we have had - and we are not even in season yet.
They are on to the coach, Chairman and some of the players regularly and as far as I am concerned they do a great service for the club.
Yes they will get things wrong but give them a break now and again will you.
For info. they are presently working on the pre-season "pull out" and I can tell you that if the soccer got 12 pages and we only get 6 it is down to one thing - the soccer pulled in 6 pages of extra advertising.
Chrsitmas rant over.
