Can anybody en-route (M40, M6, etc...) comment on how the motorways are around them and if there's any chance of us heading up North for Christmas?
Cheers

Local forecast is -9 tonight, so real problems tomorrow am.
BBC 3 counties is the site you need for around here.clicky
Today the A41 was the only problem route.
I've got to travel to Warrington Tuesday (they are a lower league version of Sheffield Wednesday), hoping the trains are ok by then.
Got to drive up Boxing Day.

The forecast is cold and clear for the next 2 days, so I'd try to get up before Wednesday if possible. That way you will also see the Lake District fells at their most picturesque with a decent covering of snow.
The M6 northbound should be clear, freezing fog may be the only problem in the morning, as well as lorries jack-knifing which I think caused problems over the weekend.
If you wish to see the fells, then come off the M6 at junction 36 and take the A591 to Kendal then Keswick.
Weather permitting you will be able to see a Cumbrian Rugby League derby on Boxing Day (Town v Haven), but I doubt wether it will go ahead.

Take a few sandwiches for a picnic, and a blanket to sit on; a big one.
If you could get the wife to video it, we could all enjoy your trip later.

If the weathers still bad, I'd skip the scenic tours suggested above, personally, and head for J40 then jump on the A66, chances are the last few hundred meters or whatever, at the end of the journey down "residential" roads will be the most hair raising!

We did plenty of sight seeing last time we went up to visit so this time the most direct route from here to a cold beer infront a warm fire is my plan. I have been on plenty of walking holidays all round Cumbria so I am happy to skip seeing more lakes and big hills this time round.
