Stadium has a roof, probably just as many fans will turn up as they do for the bank holiday version.

Because, considering various factors, it was considered that would be the best time of the year. People will have been waiting for the season to start and hunger for their rugby league might result in a fuller turn out. Equally, attendences at previous events may have convinced the RFL that a time away from the August bank holiday might be advantagous, as attractions such as the beach are less likely to pull fans away.

Unless, you are asking me why it is cold in February and there are no fans. That is because fans are used to cool people down and they are not required in February as it is cold. The reason February is cold is because there is a seasonal effect owing to the tilt in the Earth's axis and winter occurs during a period including February.

To be fair to the RFL they are trying, its an event thats yet to find its rightful place in the calendar.

If it were at all possible I'd love to see it open the season, but also have the WCC "headlining" one of the evenings, it needs a touch of glamour for me that it lacks in its current format.

Overall i think that is a good idea. The only thing is who does the spare team play? I suppose catalans could be given another home game against the wcc participant.

I'm on the millennium stadium mailing list and they have just e-mailed a promo for the event which is cool as that is bound to be a pretty big mailing list. The only thing for promo stufff in wales i think it is a mistake to focus on the comp as a whole. In wales i would say some of the clubs are more famous then superleague itself and in turn that means wigan and st helens. That should be treated as the anchor game with added efforts to promote the crusaders game on a wales versus england angle.

Ah, you Super League types ought to try the Northern Rail Cup in February for a basket-case event that's shoehorned into the calendar and that no-one gives a toss about.

That's a Rugby League event, by the way...

As a south wale scorpions supporter i know about it. I understand your point but how do we address the lack of games for champ and champ 1? The final seems to go down ok.

They could have there fixture brought forward a week as a warm up for the team competing in the WCC, but no doubt the Aussies would throw it into disarray by wanting to arrange a date year by year.

The idea of opening the season with it is good, fans eager to see their new guys in action, a lot of clubs get good gates for the opening game, though how that will translate into fans travelling to Cardiff has to be seen.
The weather is an unknown factor, as it is every day in this country, but I went to the Scottish highlands in Feb a few years ago, it was lovely, unless you wanted to ski:-no snow.

I agree largely with that, and we have to hope it works (in terms of spectator support), if not you do have to wonder what the next step is, since the basic concept can only be tweaked so far. I'd guess that it's more or less breaking even, or at least not costing too much to stage but without the sort of participation seen at Wembley or Old Trafford you have to wonder what value the RFL will continue to place in it.

It has been put forward as a regional trailblazer in the past, a sort of loss leader to attract locals and hopefully spread the game, but given the lack of support (and let's be honest, thin crowds do nothing positive for the game's image, neither to potential sponsors nor supporters) maybe the event is not going to go on in its current guise much longer.
