No, not a thread about the atrocious "reality" television programme based in the county. As an Essex born and bred man with a passion for Rugby League, I'm wondering why there is only one team in the county operating at Open Age level (Hainault Bulldogs, if I'm not mistaken).

The re-emergence of the Essex Eels, or a similar name, would only benefit the fantastic work that has been going on in Brentwood in 2010. The Elvers have had Grand Final appearances and now have had a player called up to International level (I read that on here) and I believe there was a presentation made at Wembley to a school teacher from Brentwood, his name escapes me.

Surely an Open Age team is the only way to keep the fantastic work going. Because, at the minute it seems that there is little left after under-16's level. Sadly, these boys will seemingly be lost to Union, give up the sport altogether or end up at a different club. The hard work is obviously in place and the fact that the Elvers have had teams appear in JL Grand Final's, shows that there is obviously a number of talented players and coaches at the Elvers. Admittedly, throwing 16 year olds into Open Age RL would be wrong but surely steps could be made to make an Academy/Under 18's side and then the Open Age Essex side.

If the "Eels" name was re-used, then obviously going gung-ho and going into a National League would be running before the club could walk but if there was a London League "Eels" side then surely some of these talented boys that are currently playing for the Elvers, will carry on playing RL, return Essex to the greatest game and keep expansion going!

I'm happy to help/play/volunteer etc and I'm sure I could get some RU players involved.

I would imagine that the Eels have some plans to return as an open age side.

There's also Eastern Rhinos in Colchester but yes I agree with the idea of Under 18s then London League, though unsure if the Essex Eels name has too many connotations and a new name would be better?

There is huge potential in Essex, that is undeniable. However, what we don't want to do is fall intot he same trap as the Eels did and rely on Union players to prop up the open age team.

Through the work at Brentwood Elvers, in 4 years we have developed from 2 teams to 7. This year, we are running teams at U7,9 and 11 at minis, with U12,14,16 and 18 at Junior League Level. This year we have managed to provide funding, alongside the RFL to employ our first Community Rugby League Coach. This will hopefuilly pay dividends across the whole county, and not just in our front yard. We are working alongside Thurrock, Southend and Basildon Colleges to recruit for the U18s to balance the number of lads we already have at that age group.

We are always looking for volunteers who are in it for the benefit of the game, not their own personal motives, so if anyone fits the bill and wishes to join the club, a pm with personal details is most welcome.
