Is there a rift developing at the AMNRL? It seems that way if the posts on David Niu's twitter site are to be believed. http://twitter.com/davidniu7 You may have to go down a couple of pages to read tweets from Niu to Vassilokopoulos.

Yeah i've noticed niu saying that rugby league is starting in...in 2011 but with few details. Seems to be under a bit of pressure. Spinner howland said on his twitter that they are going to start a three team local comp in florida. He seemed to imply it might be a modified versionof the game!

Is it the case that because RL is such a tough, uncompromising game that it creates uncompromising characters? is this one of the reasons that we suffer from splits and fall outs etc?

Here's hoping it all gets sorted out. From what I've been able to find out, six of the AMNRL clubs have raised their concerns to Niu and want some changes. I take it not all these changes were well received, but hopefully things will be sorted out and everyone can continue to move forward together.

I personally think its a little poor by Niu that he has voiced these opinions publicly when there are still discussions occurring between the groups. It just puts unneeded tension on all parties, and brings other people and other voices into this which never help, and do start people assuming and taking sides. (Yes I know in this post I am being one of those unneeded voices)

I guess we'll just have to see what effect this has on the game over there. I guess it's one of the problems for a sport like RL in devloping countries where much of the power rests with individuals. Small arguments can lead to big splits.

I suppose the one positive is this is kinda in the tradition of american sports where rebel or breakaway leagues add a dynamic that aids growth instead of retarding it. Most famously of course baseball with the NL and AL leagues and gridiron with NFC and AFC. Lets hope that is what happens, with Niu able to progress things but with the more open and indeed legally co-operative style of the USARL also growing.

The main point of contention is the tomahawks. The USARL have been clever in not hinting at a rival national side (even though it's been suggested that the USARL will have the better players in their ranks) leaving it in Niu's hands not be petty and admit USARL players into the national side. Which of course would be a tacit admission of the new leagues legitimacy.

Then maybe when two leagues are up and running (although some of the supposed new AMNRL sides seen to have been rushed announcements to head off the new league) we could see superbowl of american league!

It might work - they newly formed group can handle the semi-pro side of things, which presumably has a different set of imperatives than the amateur game, and the existing organisation can deal with the amateur and international scene.
