It's that time of year again when the sycophants and undeserving get their gongs!
I wonder how many people actually turned down the chance of one of these archaic awards? Surely it's time to do away with this farce once and for all!

It does serve a purpose: It is brilliant at exposing hypocrites twice a year.

No gong again this year, eh? Condolences.

Of course, he may have been offered one and declined. Given his career in terms of length and success, I'd be surprised if he hadn't been sounded out by now.

The gongs are still totally worthy awards for the majority of recipients. The fact that at the 'top end' they are full of political and 'image' (e.g. England's entire 2003 RUWC squad... inc. kitman etc) winners. is totally skewed.
For many, it's still a wonderful affirmation of their public service.

..and...these things don't come out of nowhere. There is a process for nominating people for awards.
see here
Anybody can make a nomination for somebody to receive an honour. Numbers of honours are strictly limited however, and not all nominations will be successful. There are no specific deadlines for making a nomination and most applications take 12 to 18 months to consider.
Given the position our sports holds in the UK establishment, I reckon we are lucky that anyone gets an award. For example a Welsh guy got an award for "services to Wheelchair Rugby". You can bet that wasn't "Wheelchair Rugby League" and I bet Ray French's award was the result of a nomination not the result of someone on the Honours committee thinking " y'know that French chappie is a good egg, doncha know, what what , eh?"
