sounds interesting.. and a good way to go i think. Would take quite a bit of TV cash to get going though.

Think this is a brilliant idea, but not a new one obviously as we tried to get a 9s circuit going in Europe (Is that still going, certainly York 9s is not what it was)

But if the NRL, RFL, RLEF, are willing to actually make a proper go of this it could and should work.

Based in Saudi, all that seemed to be on OSN recently was the Dubai7s and I have to admit I was very jealous. As Buderus said it's a brilliant expansion tool and contrary to popular belief Aussies are interested in the International game, who'd of thunk it?

Here’s hoping the powers that be see the benefit? A proper International 9s based in cities around the world biggrin.gif

A World 9s event would be a fantastic way to start the season off under the roof in Cardiff. A truly international event would be far easier to sell to the Welsh public than the Magic Weekend format.

Hasn't this fool noticed that there is a 9's tournament played ay Headingley every year?
Where was he when the tournament was played this year?

The insularity of most australians amazes me.

FFS. He's talking about it as if it's his invention.

I might be wrong but I think it could just be the Aussie newspaper needing to explain the game to the Australian public as opposed to Buderus claiming it as his idea. They do at least mention the SL 9s back in the mid 90s, but it's hoping for a lot for them to mention the events here in the UK. Just the way the article has been written rather than Buderus himself.

Was that not an RL World 7s? As there is footage of an RL 7 comp with International teams & ARL teams from the US in '94 (?) on YouTube. I haven't been to any RL 9s or RL 7s comps but would imagine 9s is far more entertaining.

The World 9's were held in Fiji and another year in Townsville. Western Sydney hosts an International 9's tournament each year, which originally started out as 7's.

The World Nines in 1996 and 97 were run by Super League in Oz in direct competition to the establishment ARL's World Sevens, which had been running since 1989(ish). It was another part of the plan to de-rail the ARL and bring all their players running to SL. Never quite worked though. Both comps stopped when the NRL was jointly formed in 1998.
