One or two who were there might argue with your term 'competitive' by all accounts....

I'm amazed you don't know, we are not prepared to take on Doncaster, because they have resigned a great player, in my opinion, that excellent Barnsley player, Grant Edwards......And, we are still singing Old McDonald has a farm, it takes the Crawford Biscuit.....Both signings smell of an exchange deal that has not been publicized.....

They are also waiting to announce the signing of a fullback - any chance it might be Johnny

Anyway it looks like Tubs has answered our questions in the star today - and it NO!

Is there any news of the Date and Time of Public Training Session Match, highlighted below......

Eagles' lads 'don't need a pre-season'

SHEFFIELD Eagles' decision to start the new season without playing 'friendly' games is the right strategy, says coach Mark Aston.

Many Championship clubs are testing their squads in pre-season games but the Eagles will go straight into the Northern Rail Cup group stages next month.

Aston feels that will prove to be the best policy after the recent severe weather badly disrupted training.

"We didn't arrange friendlies, we have looked at how we start in the Northern Rail and feel this is the way to do it," said Aston.

"Because of the weather we haven't been able to get outside to train and we need 14 sessions at least on grass to get things right before the season starts."

The players reported back for training this week and the plan was to work outside as soon as possible. Kyle Wood and James Cording, signed on dual registration deals from Huddersfield Giants, are expected to join some of the sessions.

Aston plans to give the players a chance to stake a claim for a Rail Cup starting spot in a full-contact game between teams drawn from the first and reserve team squads in the final weeks before the season kicks offs.

It will give fans their first chance to see some of the new signings including former Castleford Tigers' prop Liam Higgins and ex-Doncaster back row forward Scott Watson.

"We will play a very competitive game of rugby league and it could be we'll pick the team for the first game based on that," he said.

"It will be a public training session and people will be able to come along and watch."

The disruption to the training schedule in December was eased by the Eagles using indoor facilities at Don Valley Stadium and Sheffield Hallam University's Pearson sports centre.

Aston said: "A lot of teams won't have had the luxury of the indoor facilities we've had at Don Valley and Sheffield Hallam.

Eagles kick-off their season with a trip to Gateshead Thunder on Sunday February 6 and the following weekend Whitehaven visit Bramall Lane.
