From what I've seen will Ben and Perry be followed in the future by a hell of a lot of the current BI U12's squad on various scholarships throughout the land Jan? ohmy.gif Some very good players there from what I've seen?

I think Dean Marwood will do a marvellous job if all his plans come to fruition at Barrow. There are some wonderful young players in all the current age groups in a lot different teams in the local leagues. It's not like there is nothing to offer which can only be good for the town.

Garner and Singo are future SL class players though, no doubt about it.

okay, so firstly well done to these two lads, good players from a v.good coached team.
but slightly off topic, the under 12's may look good, but imo the quality of rugby at that age is down on what it was 2 years ago, (round here) but offering a young 12 year old a scholarship (i am only going of what has been said on here) would be highly pointless, rugby at that age is about who is the fastest and who is the biggest, not who is the best. Also, the local youth sturcture isnt the best, i understand that there is always going to be a "best" team which attracts the good players, at my age group this has recently changed from barrow island to askam, however askam are mostly homegrown askam lads, who have been coached by steve very well. However (i know this was discussed by the askam lads alot leading to this year) they are too good for barrow and district league, imo they should be playing up the coast, or down in the nwc youth. but i do dislike how every one looks at barrow island and says oh yeah there great. players from barrow island have an advantage, because of the service area set up (how it was) luckily imo for paul crarey to now be looking for talent around here (this imo makes it a fairer policy, and the players now not having to move until they reach the potential)
also id like to use this most to congratalate greg, greg richards has been selected to train with england u16s.. i havent seen his name on here before, so think you should all know that.
dont comment on here alot, but this is a subject i think needs sorting,

Why dose this need sorting? no one is saying the 12s getting a scholarship he means looking to the future and guess you have not seen them play they have a fantastic coach in Daz Carter.
Rigger is a good lad and his heart is in the right place but to be honest Askam team is not the team it was a few years ago

yes, im on about prockys lot, really good team (just short imo of the awesome b.i team that were undefeated?). I havent seen them play, but the local u12's league, is not of the same quality as it was last year. so like i said, what needs sorting that, if as you say these are brilliant u12's by the time they develop to 14/16's they will reach the standard of these askam 16's and because of the way it works if they will get all the good players from around here. SO They will have to move to a diffrent better league because, if you play against players that you are stuffing, there is no point in a development scheme.
This should be funded from some where as travel costs will cost alot, but it is the only way these players will get better.

I am unable to play rugby at the moment due to a long-term injury but I played for Askam at u14's and u16's level and can completely empathise with those of whom feel let down by the youth setup around the area at the moment. From experience of mini-rugby in the last few years, only a small number of teams, 4/5 at most, have been able to field a team of players every week, while the other local teams are made to struggle to scrape a team together. I always used to look forward to Service area matches as there was very rarely the threat of matches being postponed due to an opposition being unable to field a team; Allerdale and Copeland always had large squads full of energy and enthusiasm. I am also lead to believe that the local leagues up the coast are very competitive and a much more free-flowing sytem that exists in the Furness area. When matches are being called off every other week and younger lads are only ever playing 5/6 matches a season, its not hard to identify why so many kids are choosing to quit the game and reject the chance of development.

Okay then, this is a pointless debate really, because there are so many factors. But the game around here could be better. in my opinion local youth league is swings and round abouts, so some years its good, Askam 16 this year. Askam 16 next year, they won't be. The age group. That in my opinion is why a scholarship at barrow we have to look out side bandd, like other clubs have, but we are blinded by this on this board. That's it for me on this one, but, speaking totallly neutrally it could get better there are only 6 teams in the u16 league. Also. . . Well done to these two for getting a trial. back on topic now. . .

I coach both Ben and Perry at Cumbria u17's.Both are very good players and will only develop further with full time coaching.

Ben is a very good centre who plays above his weight and will run and tackle all day.

Perry is one of the best loose forwards I've seen for his age for awhile.Strong as an ox and hard as nails. When we played Yorkshire he had his nose smashed all over his face and he got it patched up and carried on.

I wish both lads Good Luck.

For what its worth I pretty much agree with barrowtillidie but what he says about the quality of the league and the lads is slightly irrelevant if they get the access to a better standard of coaching on a scholarship, wherever that may be, then surely they can bring that back to the local area and thats gotta be good for the B+D.
