Looks like they are moving out of the Rec on to the land next door where the soccer club play.

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

The cheaper scheme will overcome funding cuts but take just under 5,000 spectators – 3,000 fewer than originally planned.
An 8,000-capacity stadium would have met RL Super League standards but Whitehaven Rugby League Club has since been relegated to the lowest division and suffered administration.

Meanwhile, the RFL (the game’s governing body) is in talks with the Whitehaven Miners Welfare and the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation for a 25-year lease for the present Whitehaven RLFC ground and enable a new access road into the stadium.
Compulsory purchase powers can be used if necessary
Does this mean the club outside the rec will be lost in
the devlopment ???

I couldn't understand that bit myself as the land at the Rec is charity land under the control of the Trustees of the Miners. Two years ago they told Haven that they wanted £15k per year rent but Haven couldn't afford to pay that amount and continued to pay only £5k per year. If Haven are moving out in to the new stadium then why do the RFL require a 25 year lease on the old Recreation Ground pitch? The access to the new site is up a narrow lane at present between the Rec and the railway but it seems a bit much for the RFL to take out a 25 year lease at £15k per year just to make an access through to the new site. What happens to the pitch at the Rec over those 25 years?
The council have supposedly been looking at compulsory purchase order for a couple of years or so but it would cost them quite a sum of money to compensate the charity for the land and the club outside the Rec IS the charity and they are trustees for all the land where the rugby club , bowls club, the junior soccer pitch and the large pigeon club building stand.

What does anyone know about 'Britain's Energy Coast'? Is Workington included? Does Workington qualify for similar funding as awarded to Whitehaven? Why is Whitehaven favoured by the nuclear industry when Allerdale probably provides as many employees as Copeland ? Arnie

Good luck to Whitehaven I say. To be fair, a 5,000 capacity is a more realistic option and would be ideal for semi-pro footie and rugby.
Even on a good day the ground will only be 25% of capacity but should still be enough to generate a good atmosphere. It's refreshing to read that they still have a forward thinking council who are prepared to invest in facilities for the people of Copeland, unlike our own council who are still wrangling over the sale of land to Tesco and what to do with the money!!
I still think Town are missing a trick and should approach Tesco about building a supermarket on Derwent Park and building a 5,000 capacity ground for the club somewhere else in the town.

I agree with DTTRR's and good luck to Haven for as he has said they have a council that is interested in sport and leisure and not set in the 1950's. It does help if people in the right places are also fans of rugby league sucha s Haven have at Sellafield and Westylakes where all the decisions are made.
In answer to Arnie's question, the British Energy Coast has a 10 year plan, costing £50 million, concluding in 2020 for sport, culture and leisure to cater for the influx of people that are expected to come her in the £2 billion Energy Coast project. http://www.britainse...sport_faci.html
Whether any of that funding finds its way to Workington is debatable but the Port of Workington is earmarked for £15 million of modernisation work and you can't get much nearer the port than DP!!!
We need to get our Allerdale councillors on the Energy Coast committee more active in the sports department if we are to get anything from this project which is supposedly to cover from Silloth to the Barrow.

Thanks Keith. I would have thought that this would be a good time to improve Derwent Park or even build a new stadium, as I am sure once this recession reaches its conclusion prices are going to rise again to some degree and labour and land will be more costly. Arnie

What's the chance of Whitehaven AFC telling Copeland that they don't want a shiny new modern stadium, because they don't want their pitch ruined by those horrible Rugby people.
PS
Don't bother replying to this ' Rockerlad ' we've heard it all before.
