hello

can't really say i'm a hawks fan but my dad was a lifelong hunslet supporter upto the early 80s probably when he became a rhinos fan. sad but true. back in the mid-to-late 70s he took me to my one and only hunslet match at the old greyhound stadium. the game ended in an 11-11 draw. can anyone tell me exactly when the match was and who the opposition were?

Sorry, can't find a trace of an 11-11 draw at the Greyhound Stadium. There were a few close scores to that including a 14-14 and 16-16 draw and a couple of wins and defeats with an 11 score for one of the sides.

There were only three draws at the Greyhound Stadium in all the time we played there (1973-1980) ...

16-16 v WORKINGTON (Division Two, 19 October 1975)

5-5 v DEWSBURY (Division Two, 20 March 1977)

8-8 v ST HELENS (Division One, 4 November 1979)

Any of these ring any bells ??

no, but thanks for the info. i'm starting to think the game must have got to 11-11 at some point and that's what i remember even tho it wasn't the final result. am i right in thinking the team played in green and white at that time?

Correct -- never a 0-0 draw against Hull.-- the only 0-0 against Hull was about 5 seconds after the kick off!

and yes Hunslet did play their first games as NEW HUNSLET in green jerseys and white shorts -- this was because the famous m/w/flame colours were still registered to the former Parkside based club., and they wouldn't release them. In 1978 Bill Ramsey (who was coach at the time) and myself put a lot of pressure on the RL and finally got permission to use them.
Note -Hunslet original colours when formed in 1883 were blue and white alternate squares ( like Blackburn Rovers once had) -- they changed to chocalate and white when they won all 4 cups, and to m/w/flame in 1932 when they were given new kit by Leeds University ( their colours at that time.).
Hunslet have played in various variations of these colours. --- and still after all these years I still get mixed up IS IT myrtle, white ,and flame, or myrtle. flame and white.?

ps -- just to go back to games against Hull Hunslet have beaten Hull home and away (Boulevard).

I'll hear of nothing but Myrtle, White and Flame!

Incidentally I've got a mirror that for years was in The Regent pub in Chapel Allerton which commemorates Hunslet's All 4 Cups and shows the cups but instead of Flame there is red as I don't think that they could get an orange colour on there in those days! It was in The Regent as Ken Buck was the landlord and his dad was Harold Buck who was the first £1000 rugby league transfer from Hunslet to Leeds in 1921 (I'm sure you know this Frisky and Gabby)! My dad asked Ken if he could have it in the 80s when he retired as landlord

You're older than you look if you can remember the last 0-0 draw at home against anybody Robin Hood ... the last one was just over 92 years ago !!

However, your memory might not necessarily be playing tricks on you ... the league match v Hull in 1979 stayed scoreless throughout the first half, and for a long, long time into the second half; we eventually lost 5-7, all the scoring coming in the last few minutes.

Perhaps you left early that afternoon, frustrating by the lack of scoring action !!

Ken Buck also played for Hunslet, signing from Morley RU in 1945/6 season. There were a few of those mirrors made I believe, to celebrate something at the time, but the colours should have been chocolate and white instead of myrtle white and flame. Also, the red colour was more accurate for the change of colours as the colours were a darkish green, a maroony red and white [see my avatar]. Over the years, it gradually changed to an orange instead of red and a lighter green. If you see the university shirt or a scarf, you will get the idea.

I have got the same mirror mate, it was given to me by Peter Jarvis, I have it up in the hall way in my house!

Ah, makes sense that (almost Keighley-esque). I hadn't put 2 and 2 together for your Avatar but wondered why it was red. You could film a whole documentary on the ever changing colours of Hunslet!

And I thought it was the only one and would one day earn me a fortune, being bought by a wealthy Goldthorpe!

I have a Hunslet scarf which was my fathers dating from the 1940's, and in my eyes the flame colour is RED --I suppose flame is a mixture of red and orange. I remember taking the scarf to the club office when we were ordering new kit but the manufacturers couldn't match it -- the orange was the nearest they could get, so that's how we ended up with the "flame" colour today.

Might the game you're thinking of be the 11-10 defeat in the Floodlit Trophy?
