Is there anyone on here who is an expert on team history and/or former players? My granddad, Jock McAvoy, played for Town in the 1940's and 1950's and was on the team that played in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley in '58 - my family and I are putting together a retrospective on his career (he's currently fighting cancer and we think it might help cheer him up).
Can anyone help me find info, club records, pictures, etc.?
Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your Grandads plight, I lost 2 of my Granda`s to cancer, I hope he wins his battle. I`m sorry I cant help you but you could try and contact the club directly, I`m sure they could help as hopefully they will have kept records and photo`s from that time. After a quick search on google I couldnt find much but there is a story on a Jock McAvoy who played for Bradford in one of the old Rugby League Journals on this site. http://www.rugbyleag..._issues_43.html Good luck in you search and send your grandad my best wishes, anyone who played for Town is worthy of my thanks and prayer.

Hi Sarah Kate, I answered your message on the Whitehaven forum and gave you Jock's history at Workington.
I remember him playing for Town as a utility back as he could play in many different positions in the backs. He was well liked by the fans and players alike. I'm sure, as dkw has already said, the best wishes and prayers of all Town fans go out to your Grandad at this time.

I remember when .............................
"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

According to the stats I have, Jock McAvoy played 85 games for Town, scoring 10 tries and kicking 5 goals for a total of 46 points.
